Re: Akwar'eum

Yeah, as they get bigger evidentely they get faster, or hungrier or meaner, or something. One ate Toby the goby and ate the tail on one of my cardinals down to the bone before he escaped. Supposedly it's just the big ones (which mine are) that you have to look out for. They're opportunistic feeders and will attack sleeping fish also. Anyway, one to go!

what about bristle stars
I was posting when this one came up. From what I read and have experienced, Bristle stars too, I'm not 100% on them. But I know for an absolute fact Serpents will catch what they can.

Re: Akwar'eum

To my knowledge, bristle stars are sometimes even worse than serpents when it comes to eating fish.

Re: Akwar'eum

Everything I readd says Brittle stars are much worse than serpents. Particularly the greens for some reason. I did however witness a relatively small serpent eat a harlequin shrimp at the lfs this week. Makes me worry about my orange serpent since it is getting quite large.

Re: Akwar'eum

I went to my LFS monthly shindig last night and won these guys:

I'm not sure what the first one is and neither was the LFS, they said it was too small to ID. He's about 3/4" in diameter, the yellow looking areas are more white than in pic, and the green flowers are much greener, don't know why it's so fuzzy, I thought it was in focus when I took the pic.
The Daisies are beautiful and seem very happy this morning. I'll try to take a better pic and post it tonight of the mystery guy.
Thanks for all the posts on this chronicle, I didn't mean to scare everyone about their stars though. They're just doing what they do, possibly target feeding them with krill or silversides will keep them from hunting? Since I caught the one and almost caught the other, I haven't even seen the others tentacles at all, I guess I scared him pretty bad, man he's fast though.
Oh, I almost forgot, I've got a macro algae I can't find an ID for:

This is about a months worth of growth and the side runners are new in the past three days. Seems to be thriving and I believe I can keep it under control but it's growth rate lately is worrying me a little. I think it's beautiful though, and Gail likes it a lot.
PS. I just started using TM Pro salt mix this week, I haven't tested yet though, I'll see if it's worth the extra expense.

Put that macro in a fuge or better yet get rid of it. Once it gets into a rock it is very hard to remove. I hve been trying to get it out of my 125 for over a year and still see bits every now and then. I wish I remembered the name but it will take over and do so quickly.

Nice additions Greg! A Foxface rabbitfish will make short order of that Caulerpa.

Do you think my tank can handle another fish? I've only got 9 fish, mostly small ones but Gail thinks we're full... if YOU say otherwise she'll believe it. She thinks I want to fill it till it explodes. So it IS caulerpa?

Re: Akwar'eum

OK, I've finally gotten to the TRUTH!. Gail read my last post and said it doesn't matter what Scott says, she's been telling me the tank is full so I'll quit spending money on livestock! My birthday is coming up in October by golly, we'll see then...

Re: Akwar'eum

This is a better picture of the mystery frag. It's really small, the green flowers are about the size of a pinhead.

Re: Akwar'eum

That is grape caleurpa aka Caulerpa racemosa which is very invasive ! I would definitely try to remove it and place it in the sump or refugium. Does the coral have a skeleton ? Do you know if it's LPS or SPS ? At first glance it appeared to me to be Galaxia.

Re: Akwar'eum

After looking for two hours online and finally posting my question on what kind of algae it was, I found it while looking for something else in two of my books, and they both agree with everyone about it's removal. You're right, it is grape caulerpa and I've already removed what I could, it's surprisingly tenacious, it really doesn't look like it would be. I found two other colonies while trying to thin out some bubble algae too.
As far as the little frag goes, I'm not sure if it has a skeleton, it never looks any different than in the photo. If it had a skeleton it would pull into it occasionally wouldn't it? I'm still really new to the coral thing so bear with me. I'll look up galaxia and compare photos. Thanks a lot.

Hmm I wonder if I have room for a foxface. LFS had one that looked gorgeous just this weekend. Grrr I am trying not to buy fish anymore. I'll have to re-calculate the bio-load and see.
