| Manta Ray | Re: Akwar'eum As some of you know my turbinaria cup has looked like it's allergic to something lately, the Goniopora has all but expired and the GSP has been hiding a lot. It finally occured to me as I was about to dose the tank with Vodka that these symptoms began to occur about three weeks into using Vodka for nitrate reduction. So last Tuesday I stopped cold turkey. I know you are supposed to gradually reduce it's use but I was so worried about everyone that I just stopped. I expected some nitite readings. Anyway, the GSP perked up immediately, and the Cup is open like it hasn't been in weeks. The Goniopora may not recover but I am nursing it as well as I can. My readings today were as follows: Alk: 7dKH PH: 8.12 Temp: 79.3 Sal: 36ppt, 1.027sg NH3/4: 0 NO2: trace NO3: 1 Ca: 390 Mg: 1325 I'm pretty happy with those readings. I guess I shan't try Vodka again except to pour it over icecubes. Maybe add a little cranberry juice to it! Cheers! And don't use Vodka in your tank!

| Manta Ray | Re: Akwar'eum The odd thing was I was only using 1/5-1/10th the "recommended" dose. It was like a light switched on as I was about to push the plunger in the syringe last Tuesday. A little more time needs to pass to be absolutely sure but I really think that was it.

| Acropora | Re: Akwar'eum You can make much wrong if you dosing vodka. I would like to know, have you measured from the first day 8ml? I am use, like you already know, for a long time vodka. At the moment these are 6ml I us already since many months without slightest loss onder even signs of a problem.

| Wannabe Guru ![]() | Re: Akwar'eum As I'm sure you know the Vodka is simply food for bacteria, did you notice any change in your water clarity ? If in fact you overdosed and there was a drastic increase in your aerobic bacterial levels then the first reaction would've been from the fish not the inverts, so how are the fish doing ?

| Manta Ray | Re: Akwar'eum Robert, the fish are doing fine and the clarity hasn't changed that I've noticed. The Cup coral is a little bit hived up tonight so my analysis may have been premature but I don't think so. Sorry Heinz, I was dosing (point).8ml, less than 1ml. And it still may not have been what is wrong, but the coincidence with timing is right on. The GSP has perked up like crazy and the cup polyps are really extended for the first time in a long time. Even Gail was noticing the corals were all extending more today. Again, it may be merely a coincidence. Heinz has used Vodka with GREAT success and I count his tanks among the best on RS. I was very careful and diligent in my dosing so it wasn't a shock thing, I think it was an accumulation thing. It's all speculation at this point but even so, I think I will lay off of the Vodka in the tank and rely on the turf scrubber and water management for nutrient export. I really appreciate the views and inputs, and suggestions.

| Manta Ray | Re: Akwar'eum My frameshop and antique market is inside a renovated textile mill with a restaraunt, furniture store, bowling alley, ballroom, etc. The guy that owns the building asked me if I would like to set up a saltwater system for show that people might pay to see. I asked him what the budget would be and he said he probably could spare a couple thousand for it. ... I grinned at him and looked at Gail and she said "that won't even buy the aquarium". He asked what it would take and I said "$15 grand might get it going and stocked". ...I think the project is on hold. I don't think anyone would pay to see it, what ya'll think. I might could set up a donation/maintenance jar somewhere and collect a little bit. It would be another attraction to get folks to stop in. Man, wouldn't that be fun setting up a show tank with someone elses money! It could be a school fieldtrip destination!

| Manta Ray | Re: Akwar'eum I kind of figured I would have no shortage of volunteers to spend Dannys money. Gail and I have been thinking of where to put it so that people can see and enjoy it but not actually touch it to tap on the glass, or throw pennies in it, or spit in it...not that the spit would hurt it, it's just gross, and people would do it. It may get done yet, I'll keep you posted!
