Re: Akwar'eum

This is neither a skin problem nor metabolism problem, this looks rather unambiguously like bites off polyps. I was able likewise to observe this in my Lobophytum. My Hippo tang had bitten off from time to time somewhat of the Lobo and because he has, as everybody knows, no teeth, is eaten only the external skin layer with the polyps. Observe your fish for a longer period, because „the malefactor " bites off only now and then a piece.

If these are really bites, you must do nothing else. In the reef this is a completely normal behaviour. If these are, however, no bites, it can also be a limitation of trace elements or amino acids. However, it would surprise me if these were no bites. Sinularia sp. is, actually, the last coral them such problems points. Limitations one sees at first in SPS- then in LPS- and at last in Soft- corals.

Re: Akwar'eum

Could it be the scribble face rabbitfish that is biting if that is what is happening. That's the only one I would suspect.

I know my rabbitfish seem to eat anything/everything. Not only are they pretty, they are also at the top of my list for members of an awesome CUC.

Re: Akwar'eum

I'm afraid that tearing the foot loose so I could dip this guy may have done him in anyway. He looked quite dead this morning but I've thought that before about other corals and they surprised me. Now I wish I had left him alone but Monday Morning Quarterbacking doesn't work and never has.

Re: Akwar'eum

With iodine dips I am very careful. I would never apply them with Soft corals, exclusively with SPS corals and also exclusively and only if they have parasites (Acropora, Millepora sp. Etc.). Never with LPS corals. The Sinularia is are very hardy Greg, she will recover again, am sure.

Re: Akwar'eum

Thanks for the reassurance Heinze. I learn more and more about reefing everyday. I just don't like for my charges to have to suffer for me to learn.

Re: Akwar'eum

Don't we all?

And that is what makes RS so special. People are willing to share their experiences, whether they work or not. That helps to make all of us better capable of keeping a successful, beautiful reef.

Re: Akwar'eum

Do you have a QT tank you can move him to temporarily? Just to see if your corals start to recover?

Re: Akwar'eum

Terry, I do have a 10g tank for QT but I haven't had any critters to add for ages so I'll have to blow the dust off of it, but that's a great idea.

Thanks Scott, I'm hangin' in there and feel much better tonight after I got home and saw improvement.

We have an appointment to look at a house on Monday. I can't wait! It seems perfect. 2Br, 2Ba, Extra room/game room(tank room!), T&G boards for walls (very cabinny), stone fireplace, lot's of light, large lake off the back deck, all for $189K. I hope my hopes aren't dashed! I'll keep ya posted.

Oh yeah, it has 5 acres of land also.

Re: Akwar'eum

Do the rabbitfish for approx. 10-14 days in your Qt, feed him there richly and give to him EVERY DAY a fresh salad (lettuce) or spinach or dandelion etc. Nori is also suitable but a disadvantage of Nori is, he will eat this very fast, salad or spinach mostly remains half a day in the tank and, however, he will nibble over and over again in it. In this way my Hippo tang has given up with that bite in my Lobo.
Rabbit fish graze, like tangs also, the whole day algae, find they not enough, they also already bite off once the polyps of corals (in corals are ALGAE = Zooxanthelles).. If they have a substitute which still tastes better, they will fast accept this. If the Rabbit fish comes again to your DT, you further give every day salad etc.

The house sounds great! But have you figured out how much it will cost to convert the lake to saltwater?
