| Watch this Ma! | Re: Akwar'eum ![]() I was reading about it but if my waters chemistry starts to get out of wack, I start water changes. Reset everything back to "zero" so to speak. Actually back to what the IO mix sets everything at. But I do it sloooowwwwwllllyyyy too. ![]()

| Watch this Ma! | Re: Akwar'eum I think that's the reason I prefer the two part B-Ionic additive. It's darn near impossible to screw things up by using it. I found a place that sells the mix in 5 gallon buckets for $70. The $70 is a 5g of calcium AND 5g of alk.

| Watch this Ma! | Re: Akwar'eum I love your tank, Greg. Very nice! I love the corals that have a little movement to them. I also love the colors of the hard corals. Choices, choices, choices... ![]()

| Golden Moray | Re: Akwar'eum Yes Sarah, I have two different types. The PomPoms are more whiteish blue, the ones that Bobo lives in are more burgundy. The Xenia in the finger leather photo is the stuff that I thought had died completely. It was the size of a chewed up piece of dentine gum, now look at it!

| Golden Moray | Re: Akwar'eum Cleaning Day! Monday is water change day. I changed 12 gallons from the sump this time to clean out the accumulated crud in there. Several hours later the tests are as follows: PH:8.03 (7.92-8.13) Temp: 77.1-77.9 Alk: 9dKH Calc:410 Mag:1300 NH4:0 NO2:.05 (I think I need a new test kit) NO3:1ppm supplements: two part Alk/Calc. 1.5 cup solution of each/day Dosing 1ml vodka/day The alk/calc supplement I recently started seems to work well. The vodka method of nitrate reduction seems to also be working. Now, a few more pics for you: Blastomussa wellsi ![]() Sabellastarte magnifica (feather duster worm) ![]() Montipora sp. ![]() Cryptocentrus leptocephalus (pink spot goby) ![]() Various Zooanthids and Palythoas ![]() Thanks for lookin' !

| Keeper of The List | Re: Akwar'eum Just beautiful! What is the sort of fern looking thing that's orangey/brown/black? The two-part alk/ca is the bottled stuff you buy off the shelf, right? You're not dosing kalkwasser or using your calcium reactor, right? What brand is it? Maybe I missed if you posted it already.. please do tell again if so.

| Golden Moray | Re: Akwar'eum Sorry guys, I'll label the photos. 1:Blastomussa wellsi 2:Sabellastarte magnifica (feather duster worm) 3:Montipora sp. 4:Cryptocentrus leptocephalus (pink spot goby) 5:various Zooanthids and Palythoas The two part solutions I am using are homemade using R.H. Farleys recipe An Improved Do-it-Yourself Two-Part Calcium and Alkalinity Supplement System by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com found here. For the Alk solution I bake 2.5 cups of Arm and Hammer Baking soda at 300 degrees for one hour, then mix in one gallon of RO/DI water. The calc solution is made using Calcium Chloride. I use Seachems Reef Advantage Calcium (two cups per gallon of RO/DI). I have found Calcium Chloride at a local pool supply store that I will investigate and possibly try. I balanced the calcium/alk using 'Reef Chemistry Calculator FV' this handy dandy calculator. Now, I am using 1.5 cups of each solution per day trying to slowly get the alkalinity to 10dKH. Once it is there I will determine how much solution to use to keep it there by trial and error. Thanks again for looking!
