Re: HMA’s 115 gal. Reef Tank

My Friday Update:

The current values of the 115gal tank:

Ammonia : 0
Nitrites : 0
Nitrates : < 1
Phosphates : < 0,01
Salinity : 1.0235
Alk : 9dkH
Cal : 406 ppm
Mag : 1340 ppm
Water : RO/DI
Ph – 8.0 to 8.3
Supplements: Balling Complete +Plus ( Ca, Mg, Na, Trace Elements and Amino Acids)

I was the last week some days travelling in europe. In the meantime one of my Acros fell on the Galaxea. My sister who looks after the aquariums in my absence has probably overlooked this. When I came back from the trip both corals had already died and I had to remove them. One left his aquarium not alone, but who is able to do that already for a longer time? Grrrrrrrr

Re: HMA’s 115 gal. Reef Tank

Sarah, the mushroom under the fish is a Ricordea yuma (neon-green). The diameter is in the meantime more then 18 cm (7-8"). During the next days I do a picture of her.

Wow Heinz. I'm sorry to hear about the coral loss. Awesome picture though!

I'm really surprised that they managed to kill each other that quickly though. I guess they are a bit more potent towards each other than I imagined.

I was also astonished about that Terry, this should have survived at least the Galaxea. Unfortunately both corals were covered with a thick layer of mucus as I arrived at home. It looked at first like a layer softy thin cotton. When I took the corals from the water they were completely wrapped in thick mucus and the skeleton was to see already to more than 80%.

Re: HMA’s 115 gal. Reef Tank

I'm assuming the mucus is self defense.
Could they have suffocated inside the mucus?

Yes I think it is precise like you describes Victor. The Galaxeas don’t like strong current; therefore no strong current existed at her location. Thus the mucus could not be removed and they have suffocated both. I was 5 days on business trip. In this time can happen unfortunately very much, how one can see.

It will not have been first times and also not last times that such had happened.

Re: HMA’s 115 gal. Reef Tank

My Friday update (sorry a little late) ..... and again no news about the 115gal tank, all values are in the norm areas, all animals healthy. At the moment I work on my aquarium homepage. She will appear during the next days under a new Domain (ReefDreams).

The current values of the 115gal tank:

Ammonia : 0
Nitrites : 0
Nitrates : < 1
Phosphates : < 0,01
Salinity : 1.0229
Alk : 9dkH
Cal : 406 ppm
Mag : 1340 ppm
Water : RO/DI
Ph – 8.1 to 8.4
Supplements: Balling Complete +Plus ( Ca, Mg, Na, Trace Elements and Amino Acids)

.... and new pic's !

Blastomussa merleti

With cleaning the tank a bad luck has happened and three spires of the Stylopora broke off. It is to be seen in the picture foreground. I hope this becomes overgrown fast again.

Stylophora pistillata (cream-white)
