Re: HMA’s 115 gal. Reef Tank

With proper lighting why would you feed the Anemone so often ? Do you think it expelled some of it's zooxanthellae because of stress ? My RBTA also did the same thing but it was because of a dramatic increase in lighting intensity, it became light pinkish color. Not a good photo but you can see it off to the right.

This article by Robert Fenner is excellent and speaks to the dangers of overfeeding hosting Anemones:

Quote:
Most losses in captive systems are the result of over-feeding. How many more times do I feel I need to write this? Bunches! Some anemones have been kept for YEARS without any intentional external feeding. Know your stock! Many anemones (especially larger species) are detritivorous (a polite term meaning they eat poop), planktivorous, and largely chemoautotrophic/photosynthesizing species/individuals that hobbyists try to over-stuff with meaty/prepared foods. My bid for largest cause of loss of anemones is the consequences (lack of oxygen, hydrogen and other sulfide production...) from over-feeding.

Feeding Anemones
Thank you for the information Robert. For many years I keep this anemone now already. Either they have fed my Clarkiis or other anemone fish daily or I have taken over this part. Many clones from the original anemone have split, in the meantime, ALL clones lives by best health. I will not overfeed them certainly. Believe me, I already know what I do. The cause of a dramatic increase in lighting does not apply. The reason is very low nutrients, nothing else. Also not stress.

Oh I see, I thought you were target feeding it 3x a week.

I can see how a low nutrient environment would affect them this way but if they are being fed regularly, I would think it would be irrelevant, no ? Don't these Anemones originate from a low dissolved nutrient environment ?

Re: HMA’s 115 gal. Reef Tank

The low nutrient concerns exclusively the Zooxanthelles of the anemone, not the anemone itself. Because the anemone can receive no sufficient amount of sugar from the Zooxanthelles, it pushes off most of the Zooxanthelles. The Zooxanthelles do not find any more enough food there PO4 and NO2 / 3 as a nutrient in the water is absent. That's why they can also not supply the coral any more enough with sugar. The anemone goes over again and takes up increasingly food about her tentacles and mouth. In the early stage I support that a little with mussels or shrimps. In the anemone some Zooxanthelles will settle during the next weeks again, indeed substantially less than before. Their colour will thereby remain bright ones. There will not be other consequences. BTW, this process is normal for all users of the Zeovit method.

Beautiful Heinz.

That formosa has a wonderful geometry!

And the clarkii's eye should be on next years calendar.
Excellent photo.

And you added an exceptional example of the potter's angel.
What other dwarf angels do you have besides the flame angel in there?

Thank you all for the nice comments.

@vdituri

thanks Victor .... and yes, Clarkii's eye could be a picture for my 2009 calendar.

@tbittner
yes terry ....there you are right, the calcium dropped from 460 to 406, very, very slowly. 400-410 is all what i want to read in the next months.
