That fungia looks like a biscuit! Jeff, have you considered leaving this an invertebrate tank only? Possibly one or two small fish.

Nice stuff Jeff!!

No Kathy, not these kind of Fungia. It is a Fungia repanda. She is able to do climbed absolutely gradients to 30% (max. 30 cm per day). One finds them often also in higher regions in the reef. She is not so sensitive as most other kinds.

btw ... Nice additions Jeff, congrats.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

You know Scott the first fish or two will really be an experiment or test to see if i can keep fish with the Mantis. I really dont expect to have a problem especially with this species of Mantis but I wont know until I do it. But my first fish will not be a $100-150 wrasse. Just in case. Divers den has had a Long nose hawk fish available for the last couple of weeks so I am hoping they will have another one after I get back from my long weekend trip to SW Michigan.
The mantis are just fascinating creatures and I will not remove them for the tank. I loce them too much!

Thanks Heinz - I didnt know that about my fungia repanda. I have seen small families of them on a sloping rock at a couple different LFS.

AL I feed the fungia 2-3 times a week a variety of meaty foods the same as I feed the mantis. Mysis shrimp or some of the make up of my homemade slurry (fresh shrimp, squid, clam.)
The "biscuit" fungia I have had for 2 years. It used to be in my nano and i did not know they needed to be fed on a regular basis and I almost starved him to death. He used to have longer tentacles and since I almost lost him the tentacle have never really returned to how they were. Back then I thought he need to be fed like my red open brain and my trachy didnt seem interested in eating but once or twice a month so that is how I fed the fungia. I am glad I realized my error before I killed the fungia but he has never fully recovered. I just recently moved him into the 55g tank.

Here is a pic from August of `06.

Craig. I really appreciate that you stop by so often!

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

I havent said this in a while but the filter guys (.biz) are great.
I bought my ro/di unit from them last June.
I never tested the tds out of the faucet but when the system was new the tds out of the RO was 2 and 0 out of the DI. My water pressure is really low (22psi) and i know that 50-60 psi is optimal. I know I should have ordered a booster pump but that kept getting put off and eventually I decided I wanted to see what the lower water pressure would do to the filters. I get about 1g DI water an hour.
Last month I noticed my tds starting to creep up, ROo-7, DI -2. Now it is RO-9, DI 4 or 5, so yesterday i called the filter guys and ordered a replacement filter set and I talked to Jim about my low water pressure. I was expecting a lecture or dire warnings and I got no such thing. In fact he said i could probably get away with continuing as i have been using it. He did say that the booster pump would increase my DI output to more like 2g/hour. (I have read some threads here where RSers are getting 3 or 4g/ hour on their 75g/day units.) Jim did not pressure me into buy the booster pump but I had decided to order one before I called him. So I have new filters and a booster pump on its way to me. It may be here on Friday since the filter guys are not so far from Chicago but it might not be until early next week.

I made some more water over night last night. I use two 5g containers and when I get up in the middle of the night to . . . make ammonia I switch the DI hose to the other container. This morning I checked on the tds and RO was down to 5 but the DI was up to 9! My RO water is better than my DI. Looks like I ordered the filters just in the nick of time. They lasted exactly one year but I only had the 12g tank for the first two months.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

How on earth could the DI be higher than the RO? That is really strange. Glad you had another good experience. You should talk to them about sponsoring RS. They already get a lot of good reviews around here.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

When DI Resin becomes spent it can release instead of absorb. Jeff if this is Year one on your system make sure next year you replace them membrane. Also adding a 2nd DI Chamber does wonders

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

You know Lynn I was wondering that too. My guess is that some of the trapped
particals are getting flushed out of the DI unit???

My new filters are right now on a Big Brown truck here in Chicago out for delivery. The email that gave me the tracking number from the filter guys had this line in it.
Quote:
Many of our customers come from what our customers post about us on the club and saltwater forums. Please do us a favor and pass the word about our company.
So The Filter guys are very aware of how important the forums are to their business. I checked my email from them last year and it had the same line in it then too.

After i get the filters and pump I will send Jim an email asking him to consider becoming a RS sponsor. I know there are many here who have their RO/DI units.

Thanks Jack for the info and advice!

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

The pressure through the various filters in the unit have nothing to do with the final output. The TDS will be the same regardless of the pressure. The lower pressure just makes more waste water because the pressure isn't there to effectively overcome the resistance from the osmotic membrane. Having low PSI through the unit just wastes water, unless of course you are using the waste water for other things.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

I had alway heard that low water pressure could affect the life of the filters too. I knew it did not affect TDS. I did order the pump so I will have less waste water. During Flower box season , which started last weekend, I do use the waste water for the plants in containers on my deck, porch, and in the house. I did not permanently attach the waste hose to the drain so that I could salvage some of the waste water.

That's a new one for me! I just assumed that lower pressure simply doesn't make as much water, all the way around, including waste water. We had a constant pressure system put in our well, and it doesn't matter how many spigots are turned on, it's 75 psi all the time. It up's the pressure automatically, instantly.
