Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

From where does your LR come? Without to know of where the LR is, is it really difficult to say something. In the second picture is a snail, which?

First is definitif a worm. Which kind worm? The very most worms were not determined unfortunately yet.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

The LR is from the Gulf of Mexico.
The ceature in the 2nd pic is soft bodied - there is no shell.
Sorry for the poor pic but the shot is going thru 3 pieces of acrylic and falling water as he is behind the overfow box
I am familiar with Chitons as I had one in my nano for over a year.
Here is the Chiton from the Nano

He was always in the rock and only out when all lights were off.
They actually carve the rock
Recently he was on the back wall of the tank which I just knew was not good.
He spent a day going all around the sides of the tank and then he went back into his rock. The next day he was on the substrate. dead.
RIP cool little creature

First I will be adding Part two of my TampaBay Salt water Package and whatever goodies that I know will come with that. I am going on a little trip next week and will be back on the 10th. I am hoping to arrange for the TBS to be flown up here on the 11th. I have an extra day off before I have to go back to work so that would be perfect.

I have put a couple of tiny zoanthid frags in the 55. They had gone missing in the nano and I found them in the back of the tank in some rubble in the dark.
I wasn't sure if they were still alive or not but they are starting to open up after a couple of days in the new tank. There is 10-11 polyps total.

After all my TBS has arrived and the tank has settled I will slowly start adding some corals. Not sure what type just yet. I do not plan on adding any fish for several months - Probably not until the first of the year.

I am bummed about the Chiton. He was really cool. I rarely saw him (only with a flashlight at like 3am) but I knew he was there and he has really given his rock some great shape. I would often go long periods of time without seeing him.
I had never seen him on the sides of the tank or for that matter out during the day with lights on so I knew something was going on. I guess I got lucky that he did not die in the rock. That could have messed up the 12g nano parameters for sure.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Last night my Tiny mantis was out of his burrow for a little bit while the lights were on. He would work his way up the rock a few inches from his burrow and then you caould just here him ponding away on either th rock or some sponge. click, click , click. He is so tiny that he is not very loud.
I tried to take some pics but they really are not very good. The good news is I am working on a new digital camera for xmas and I think Santa is listening. Ho ho ho.

I will keep trying to take better pics. It is really much more challenging to take good pics in the 55 with the Mh lights than in the nano. I'll keep experimenting.

What a cute little mantis! I'm glad you are keeping it in your reef. He'll take care of those pesky gorillas!

Hi Tinken.
I answered your refugium question on your thread.
Let me know what you find out.
I do not have a fuge and I bet I will want to add one in the future.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Hey Golden,
I know everyone needs a vacation but I can't wait for you to get back so you can continue this thread! I really enjoy hearing about the critters that come out of the LR. We've gotten LR from 3 different sources, and learned that all is NOT equal. I'm definitely looking up your distributor if (when : ) we set up a larger tank.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

The live rock was from Tampa Bay Saltwater.
Most seem to agree that it is good rock with lots of life but lots of hh as well. Some good and some not good. Gorilla crabs seem to be a specialty. Every thread I have read about their rock includes a hunt for gorilla crabs.

I know. Altho I am excited about the trip to Toronto. I am soooo ready for part 2 of my Tampa Bay Salt Water Package. Hunting Gorilla Crabs has not been a bother at all and I find rather fun.

I have had the TBS Rock in the tank for 3 weeks now and new life forms keep showing up. I have started to notice feather dusters popping up out of the substrate rather than just on the rocks

Cool Discovery of the Day Update:
I got a better pic of one of my recent CDODs

Cool Discovery of the day.

I woke up last night at 2am and take a look at the tank with the flashlight.
On the front of the tank is this guy. Also some slug-like creature. He looks more like my chiton but he is so much thinner. I had to turn the MH on to get some pics. He traveled around to the back corner then slid under a rock. Here is a pic I got of him as he was on the side of the tank with a reflection of his underside.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Hey Golden - I've got the dusters on the sand also. Getting harder to find them as the brown growth is picking up also. My cucumber is doing laps around one rock so he's not much help so far.

This rock is so amazing!
