Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

All work and NO REEF is making Jeff an unhappy boy.

Work has been stressfull and crazy this week so I haven't been had much time to devote to this thread. There is a fragswap in Skokie today and I don't know if I will get to go. It is Sunday and I get to work on my day off. Ohhh Joy! With luck I will be able to leave in time to get to the fragswap before it ends at 4pm but I am not gonna bet on it.

The new chalice I got last weekend is not looking too well.
There seems to be more exposure of the skeleton.
When I first added it to the tank I noticed a little bit of the skeleton was exposed all around the coral. I had not noticed that at Sharky'e Reef but maybe I was too in awe of the pretty colors. The recession seems to have gotten worse this week. Now I have done some research and I have read of other reefers having similar problems for the first two weeks.
I will go into more details this evening and post some pics!

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Thanks for the update and I'm anxiously awaiting you photos. Even if they are of a receding coral, they will be great. ha ha ha. I've never been to a frag swap, but I really really want to go to one. I probably won't be "swapping" since my tank is so new, but I bet I will be buying!

Swapping money or swapping corals, either way I wish I could go!

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

I ddin't make it to the fragSwap. Maybe next time.

Here is my poor chalice.
When I first got him I put him on the sand
After a few days I didn't think he was looking any better and I wanted to put him at an angle so detritus would not collect on him. I also put hin higher in the tank thinking more light might help. I have read conflicting placement requirements for chalices. Some like low placement some like higher placement with more light. i have been target feeding - well after lights out - with cyclopese, oyster eggs, and also my homemade shrimp and squid slurry.
I did notice a couple of the months responding to the slurry. Today I noticed that the chalice was looking a lot worse. The flesh around one of the mouths is totally coming of of the skeleton. I moved him back to the sand but at a sharp angle. The first couple of pics are from the 24 hours he was in the tank. The rest are from today.

I would appreciate any & all advice!

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Hello Jeff, it looks like a Montipora flowery but i'm not sure. It is a monti, she needs very much light and very strong, , but never direct, current. PO4 and NO3 should be if possible 0. An ideal place for such a beauty is the reef roof thus as far as possible above, in the aquarium.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Heinz I thought it was an Oxypora or an Echinophyllia.
Flowery montipora. I will have to do some research.
Thank you for your help as always.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Jeff - I think I said earlier that this guy looks very different than my enchino so Heinz is probably on the right track (as usual). I couldn't find any info on the flowery monti, did you?

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Hello Jeff,

It could be a Echinophyllia costata, rather not a Oxyopora lacera. Just to show where in a reef they are to be found, I show a picture of diving off the Australian coast.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Drew the only Flowering Montipora I found by google
Limited Editions Montipora sp. Flower Petal

This reeffarmers site is pretty cool. They have lots of Echinophyllia/Oxypora
Reeffarmers Ecinophyllia Limited Editions

Thanks for the links Heinz.
The second one does resemble my coral
yet my coral has the mouths/eyes like enchinophyllia.

I will move the coral high up on the reef close to the 250W 20K mh lights
and I will keep researching.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

2 weeks after aquascaping Mantis #1 has made an appearance again.
I saw him tonight in two different rocks nowhere near the substrate.
He has gotten bigger and is thus easier to photograph.

Early last week Mantis #2 closed all the doors to his rock and did not open them for 3 days. When he reappeared he too was larger and more green.
I have not gotten a pic of him yet though

Here are some other pics I took tonight of the mushrooms and rics that I picked up last week.
