Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

dang, wish I had thought of that... my GC had me stabbing all over the place. I finally had to do some major rock moves to get him.

nice shots!!! I had a pet hermit crab that changed shells all the time, I love watching them do that. Unfortunately, my hermits are all now sporting snail shells...

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Let me know how the bait and spear method of gorilla crab hunting works for you.

Biking (pedel not motor) home from work today I stoped at a LFS and bought the first coral for the 55. Its not the first coarls in the tank as there are a lot of corals that came with the TBS package. I have also previously added a few zoanthid polyps that were roaming stray in the nano. I have also 3 smal blue mushrooms that were HH on a xenia rock that is in the nano. The xenia moved to the back of the tank and left one tiny mushroom. It a has grown and two other teeny tiny shrooms have popped up.

Any way about the new purchase!
This branching rock has Fire and Ice zoanthids going all the way around it covering the top third or so of the rock. There are a few other polyps further down the rock but they have yet to open.

Here are a few pics!

Note the flower anemome hanging upside down in the background and the Siderastrea just to the left. If you look close you can see the above mentioned blue mushrooms to the right and further back from the zoas.

In the second pic the Fower anemone was acting a little funny. I was worried that the pepperment shrimp had stayed to close. But after the anemone had opend back over normal there was a very hollowed out Gorilla crab shell. I fed him that crab two days ago. He must have be regurgitating the part that he could not digest.

Okay, okay, if you insist!
one more pic.
hee hee

Still opening up. . .

One of the most beautiful zoas I have ever seen. Your LFS must have the hook up on gorgeous specimens.

Great addition! Looks like an acropora frag that didn't make it, now it's covered in zoanthids!

Thats what I thought. The LFS had several colonies with some great color morph zoas some of which were bigger than this one. But this rock spoke to me. I loved the type and shape of the rock and was just imaginging it down the road covered with polyps.

The other coral that was speaking to me was a beautiful favia (closed Brain). It had amazing and unusal colors. Hard to describe - kinda steel blue and a deep/rich golden brown.
I decide to show some restraint - figuring that a favia is not a real good "first " coral choice.
That and I am planning a drive out to Sharkey's Reef brick & morter store on Monday so I didn't want to spend all my alloted coral $$$ this weekend

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

I am driving out to Sharkey's Reef in a few hours and I have learned that they have a Blue Spot Jaw Fish. Thanks olivert00. So Last night i started saying this mantra over and over so I will be strong and not bring a spotted one home:

I will not buy a BSJF.
My tank is too new and I saw a cirolanid isopod swimming last week.
My sand bed is only 2 inches deep.
I will not buy a BSJF.........

What will I bring home?
It will not be a fish!

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

I made it back from Sharkey's Reef.
I did not buy the Blue Spot Jaw Fish.
He was definately a beauty and only $85.00 I may add.

But what did I get?
They are floating in the tank temperature acclimating.
5 bags!
See.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

It's hard to tell what's in the bags, but I'd suggest turning off the lights. That water will heat up very fast, it's like leaving a dog in the car with the windows up in the sun! Greenhouse effect.

Re: A 55G link in the Golden Chain

Thanks Scott. I didn't think about that.
They were not floating very long ~maybe 15 minutes
I only temperature acclimated them.

I was hoping to build a little suspense and anticipation.
I will tell you that I got 4 Ricordia Florida that Sharkey's Reef mounted on one rock for me. That was one bag.

I will have pics of all soon - next couple of hours.
I have to fix our dinner now.
