Re: Here We Go Again!

Congratulations! You are now doing the smartest thing you could do, a total rebuild. Also, you're doing it right. I forgot, did you get an RO/DI filter? As far as a skimmer goes I've got a one year old Octopus NW-110 which I took off my 110 gallon tank. It was underpowered for the 110 but would work well on your tank. I've done the o-ring mod so that it draws air much better than stock. I haven't listed it yet but it's $80 plus actual shipping to you if you want it. I should also have the Finnex 4 - 54w T5 fixture available in about a week. I'll get back to you on that later.

Oh,here's a link (where I got it) that discribes the skimmer better.

Octopus NW-110 Needle-Wheel Protein Skimmer - AquaCave

Just thought I'd give you first crack at it.

I luckily have whole house RO that hubby had installed a few months ago. Water is amazing. No DI though.

I'll PM you about the equipment.

PS I found the emerald crab! He was hiding in the live rock!

Re: Here We Go Again!

I was about to post that he was probably hiding. They are very good at that.
Sounds like you are getting things set up nicely. You and your reef will be much happier in the long run.
You will need to be super careful on that 10g. Check the levels daily. Specially salinity and amonia.
Keep us posted.

Lynn, I am going away this weekend! That means I will miss Saturday testing for sure. Thank you for the tip. I'll test tomorrow and Sunday and do a water change if necessary.

Steve, I bet you are right. Once I get it started out right I'll be happier and more content.

One thing that really hit me last night is the importance of powerheads. I have never had one in the display tank and when I sucked out the water it was so stagnant and filthy at the bottom that I wondered how anything lived. Plus the decorations and live rock were COVERED in detrius. This is only 4 days after a 20 gal. water change and tank cleaning.

Re: Here We Go Again!

I think my little guys are HAPPIER in the small tank! firefish is not only out in the open, but eating like a little piglet. Also the serpent star even came out for a bite this morning! That's the first time ever. Hermes (the hermit crab) and the emerald crab aren't as crazy about the no-substrate thing, but they seem to be adapting to their temp. home.

I'll have to get a video of my firefish "playing" in the powerhead's flow. He seems to love it!

Now that everyone has moved to QT, it's time to give a RIP to those guys who died during my learning experience...

Re: Here We Go Again!

How cute!!!
The firefish looks very happy. Looks like he likes owning his own little tank.
Can't wait to see the big tank back up and running. Then he can have some friends.

Re: Here We Go Again!

I see him. How cute. I have one like that in my 20g. Don't know where it came from but his legs are always out waving around and when I re-scaped the tank I finally saw his whole body.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Very nice Melanie. That tank should work well until you get your main tank set up the way you want it.

Re: Here We Go Again!

I haven't posted here in a few days because everything seems to be going fine. My QT is doing well and nothing has died since I moved everyone in. Firefish and crabs are eating great. Gotta tell you, cleaning and changing the water in a 10 gallon is actually a PLEASURE compared to doing the same in a 72 gallon tank. "Bring me the turkey baster!"

My display tank is empty right now except for about 100+ lbs of live sand and water. I'm (im)patiently waiting for my 80 lbs. of Carribbean live rock to arrive on Thursday. I'll let you know how that goes.

I have to say one thing that has been a little frustrating. You guys may agree. The more I read on reef tanks, the more confused I get. One source says you MUST do "this" or you will have a horrible tank and another source says you must NEVER do the same thing or you will have a horrible tank. Even here at RS I get such conflicting advice that my head spins.

How do you guys handle that? Do you pick one source that you trust and follow that guide? Or do you pick and choose what things you believe to be the best and follow them? In order to save my sanity, I'm going to go with the former (one source) and possibly add/tweak/improve with ideas I get from others if they seem reasonable or better.

Note: I think I'm going to put off doing the refugium until much later. Several months from now. This will give me time to do more research and planning.
