Re: Here We Go Again!

What a great idea Christopher! I did compare and I nearly fell over.

Freshly Mixed Salt Water:
Refractomer - 1.025
Hydrometer - right between 1.022 and 1.023

My Hydrometer is very old. Maybe 5 years old? And it is one of the cheap, swing arm models. I would have never imagined it would be so far off.

Re: Here We Go Again!

A question Melanie. Do you have also two scales in your refractometer like I? On the right side the scale for PSU, on the left side for density?

Re: Here We Go Again!

Well, looks like the accurate reading was much better! Yay! Maybe this means mine could be 1.027 when I think it is 1.025!!

Re: Here We Go Again!

Thanks to Sasquatch, I have found some calibration solution for refactometers. Very interesting reading that I skimmed and will read more thoroughly.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Heinz, the left is measurements like 1.025 and the right is percent measurements like 35%.

OK, it is exactly as with my refractometer. You should never believe the data of the left Scala. As I already wrote. A refractometer can measure only PSU. Density depends always on the temperature, salinity not. Therefore values are by a refractometer were measured not comparably with the measured values aerometers.

35% PSU = 1023.34 Density and not 1.025 as you read from the left scala

Melanie, did you mean 1200? If not, I would guess that this is a result of an incorrect test kit (or one that was not done properly) and I would recommend that you retest this before you modify anything.

Re: Here We Go Again!

I agree with Lorraine. I never trust a reading that is way off. The first thing I do is clean up the test vial with DI water and then carefully redo the test. If it's still not right I get a hold of someone in my reef club and take a water sample.

If your retest comes up like the first. your test reagents are probably bad.
