Aside from fueling algae growth phosphates levels over 0.3ppm inhibit the growth of stoney corals (sps, lps) by interfering with calcification and inhibits the deposition of strontium into the coral skeleton. In essence they don't grow and may perish if the levels get too high.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Here are my test results today after a 10 gal. h2o change.

Ca 540
NO2 0
NH3/NH4 0
NO3 0
PO 0
pH 8.4
Kh 179
SG 1.025
Temp 78

I am anxious to see what my reef will look like when it is finally stocked. My pulsing xenia was probably my best purchase because it is already growing!! Seems super happy in its location.

One of my feather dusters fell behind my giant rock pile. Took me forever to stack that the way I like and I will probably have to buy those metal gripper tongs to get it out.

One of my corals came in with bubble algae on it. I'm unsure what to do about it. I have emerald mythrax crabs that eat that stuff. But I see how everyone freaks out when someone has it in their tank so I'm thinking I need to pull out the rock it's on and get the stuff off of it. I don't have any other algae. Do you think I should leave it to feed the CUC or pull it out to pick it off?

Re: Here We Go Again!

I had a little bit of red bubble algae on a rock I couldn't take out of the tank and I just placed my siphon next to it when I scraped the algae off. Worked good for me.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Definitely remeove the bubble. Hopeully without breaking it open. It is a very invasive algae that should be removed ASAP
Other than that he tank looks great! Looks like everuthing is coming song nicely. Remember to go slow. Resist femptation. I know if is hard but it will pay off in the long run.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Everybody says not to break open the bubble algae because the spores will spread, that's understandable. What I don't understand is why aren't the spores spread when the emerald crab breaks open the bubble algae?

Re: Here We Go Again!

Great question Scott and I'm really interested in the answer. Could it be that the crab will then consume it no matter where it grows? Does the crab also eat the spore?

Re: Here We Go Again!

hmmmm. good point dentoid.

I tried to get it off but I will need another round of removal in the daylight. Plus I will use tweezers instead of my fingernails. Let's hope one of the emerald crabs gets whatever is left behind.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Melanie, is your calcium a bit on the high side? Or is 540 a mistype?

Yeah, it's high. Good eyes! I actually ordered an Alk test kit last night so when it gets in I will start trying to fix the high Ca. I need to know what steps to take and I have just learned Ca and Alk go hand in hand.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Add a Mag test kit as well. They all play together. I should have all my links from the old laptop today and then I can link you to some great info on the topic.
I too have always wondered about the emeralds popping the bubbles. This is one reason I have always opted for manual removal of the bubbles.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Ca and Mg are normally in inverse proportion. When one is high, the other is usually low. Don't know about how Emeralds take care of bubble algae without spreading it but mine seem to. Nothing wrong with manual removal though. Even better if you can get the bubbles off without breaking them.

Re: Here We Go Again!

Some photos I took this morning that wouldn't upload....

Spaghetti Finger Leather...still a little droopy but perking up.

Yellow Colony Polyps...already spreading and only 3 days old.

A quick look at the QT

Some pretty zoas!

The bubble algae rock this is the most popular piece in the tank. (swarmed with crabs!) Oh, and it has some gorgeous zoas on it too.

Check out my photo gallery for some more fun shots.

Mining the memory cave here, bubble algae, not really invasive "unless" conditions are correct, like most algae. So popping bubbles isnt that critical except they are usually found at the rock curing stage or early life of system when "conditions" are correct, popping them then isnt a great idea, side note they are an excellent nutrient, and heavy metal absorber. I like them and wish I could find the clumpy finger ones Steve
