The tank WILL cycle... the bucket has the CURE which is a good thing.

The rock or sand is what is curing not the tank nor the bucket, so once the cycle is complete and you place the rock back in the tank you will not have another cycle. Now as you add livestock you have to do it slowly so that the bacteria levels have a chance to catch up otherwise it's possible to get a sudden ammonia spike because bacterial levels have not adjusted to the increase in bio-load.

OK, this is too much. ha ha ha.

I asked my 14-year-old son to watch the electric water pump that is removing water from my display tank while I run to Ace Hardware to get a large garbage container and spigot outlet because I have too much LR for my two-10 gallon tubs. He's helped me drain the water from my tank for water changes before. I'm only gone 30 min. When I get back my husband is screaming. Turns out my son left the pump unattended and it sprayed ankle deep water in our hard-wood-floored kitchen.

My husband went to unplug the pump and the stove's 200+ volt outlet was underwater and had electrified my kitchen he put his hand on the stainless steel sink and got a jolt that is enough to kill a man who ISN'T standing in ankle deep water. He yelled for my son to leave the room and my son fell over backwards and knocked his head on the floor and ripped his shirt on the counter.

So I come home to this. I help clean up the water and quietly load my liverock and water into the large can. I didn't bother asking hubby if he would drill the hole for the spigot because he was electrocuted and wet. I know when not to push my luck.

After about 10 gallons of water are poured in on top of the 80 lbs. of rock, I see that the garbage can LEAKS! Water is spouting out from the bottom.

Did I mention my hands and arms are burning from the ammonia in the water when I scrubbed the LR. Bright red and burning. There was so much ammonia in the tank that it turned my new blue glove yellow in patches.

Now I get to tell hubby WHY I'm draining the tank. You know the 100+ lbs. of live sand he collected by diving for hours? That he hauled onto and off of our boat and then the same to the house? I have to remove and discard it.

Thank god the man loves me. Or I hope he still does. I think so since he offered up one of his coolers to hold my LR while it's curing since the new garbage can won't.

So much for my 30 min. of work tonight scrubbing my remaining live rock.

PS Who would have thought having a fish tank would be aerobic and strength-training activity?

Not on the stove! It shouldn't have been placed that low anyway. We are having an electrician come move it higher before we use the stove again.

Thank god everyone was ok. It's funny now that everyone is safe. My husband is indestructible.

I wonder how long it will be before your son forgets all about it and leaves the water unattended again.

Now your husband will likely remember this one forever.

No kidding! I mean, really, am I just not meant to have a reef tank? Is God telling me something? Seriously since I started posting here a month ago, I am actually FURTHER behind than when I began.

I have go to show you what my water in my tank looked like after I scrubbed off the live rock again. And I wonder what in the world could have caused the huge ammonia spike???

My thread should be called "What NOT to do with Your New Reef Tank"

I think I know where the amonia came from.

You really have been having a hard time with this. It will get better though. I think part of your problems are because you weren't starting from scratch. You have had to try to make things work with the set-up you already had. That is always more difficult.
I really do think that things are starting to come together. Give that rock some time to be nice and cured and you will be on your way.

When you take stuff from the sea and put it in your tank, a lot of stuff can't live in the different environment or it dies in the process of transporting it.

Six months from now you can go aaaawwweeee, see what I did!!!! It will be all purdy!

Thank goodness I have my little guys in a QT so I'm in no hurry to get the tank "done". I can take my time.

I'll have to go back through my thread and double thank whoever suggested the QT first. I could kiss them!

Thanks Lynn! I sent DaveK a big thank you and a "kiss" for the great advice on moving my guys to the QT. I told him to come read page 13 of this thread to see just how bad my crash was.

I've decided to call my tank "our" tank to my family so they feel like it belongs to all of us. I mean, it now contains all of our blood, sweat, and tears (protein skimmer will get that out.)

PS, Dr. Hank, I think I got my skimmer last night. Thank you for the quick shipping! I didn't get to open it yet because of the (mis)adventures but it'll be there for me when I re-assemble.
