Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

CMG, we're sorry for your loss. dont feel silly about mourning, a year ago i gave my little brother my FW set up with 4 fish, i told him he could trade all the fish except the Sucker Fish(i've had him for 10yrs), he called me over to see his new scaping one day. the first thing i notice is my fish is gone, he traded him to a LFS the day before! I went to the LFS with a garbage bag, they had him in a filthy QT, since they knew me there i didnt have to pay for him again. I didnt talk to my brother for a week, & my family thought i was crazy but i invested 10yrs into that fish.

Hope you feel better soon.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Good story JoJo, thats how I felt when I turned my tank into SW, especially with the algae fish..he had been in there since I got the tank from my cousin. Who knows how long that was!!

Anyways, I plan on getting another one when my LFS gets another B&W clown. Maybe 2-3 months. Don't know. I think this time I will have set-up the QT tank and wont have to worry as much about the eating and skimmer pump.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Maybe I jsut wont have moonlights....are they necessary? I think it looks neat but I dont often go to the tank after lights out.

I spent about 20 minutes scrubing my rock in a 5g bucket to get all fo the gren algae off. I think its hair and or bubble algae. I cant seem to shake it and wish I had the time and resources to get a sump/fuge up and running soon. I am using ro/di and I lowered the time that the lights are on.

Maybe I should get a sea urchin, I heard they eat all the algae, but then I would have to suppliment it after he ate all the bad stuff.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

I don't think you need to moonlights. With a reef, the theory is that a complete lunar cycle is when the corals spawn. But I doubt if it does anything for a FOWLR.

For the algae, start doing 20% WC's each and every day for a couple weeks. That will get rid of all of the nutrients and help get you down close to zero nitrates. Then you can fall back to 20% once a week.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Oh boy, I was just thinking....

Do you have any friends that you would rather not be friends with? Ask them to watch your tank for you and explain how to do a WC and tell them it needs to be done every day.

hahahaha, yeah right. People already think I am nuts for doing as much work as I do on my tank, people jus dont understand what it takes to replicate an underwater habitat in a little box. hehe.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

to do the everyday water change you may have to get 2 clean tubs/cans, keep one empty fill the other with R/O water. also get 2 PHs put both on the same timer and when it kicks on the first PH would pull water out of the system while the other puts new water into it. this is what i plan on doing, but havent experimented with it yet

Wow, thats way too complicated for me right now...hahahahaha. I live in a tiny apt. (moving in may though!! ) so I dont have room for all of that stuff to just sit around in the living room. I just use 2 5g buckets to empty the tank after I have already filled another 10g bucket with ro/di + salt.
