Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

How did the chiller look? Did you buy it? Did they still have the Angel you wanted? I prefer to buy smaller fish, but not tiny, and let them grow up in my tank.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

OK, here is the big update with the pictures finally!!

First off we have the messy room during the move and the filling up of the tank along with where everything is in relation to each other:

Here is the new aquascaping:

side shot:

And here is the new Flame Angel!:

He will not stop moving so it is very hard to get a close picture of him. I gave him a freshwater bath with the blue stuff just like it says to do and I think he tricked me cause it looked like he was going to die so I only kept him in there 10 minutes vs. the 30 recomended. I was too afraid. He is totaly fine now. I tried to feed him frozen dwarf angel food and mysis but he wont eat. I did a water change after that. So many little white things fell off of him while he was in there! Yuck. He seems to have a wound on his head, its a white gash or something. All the other flame fish looked like they had them. No idea what it is?? I will try to get it in a pic tomorrow. Also, what other food should I try? I am worried about his eating more than anything sine he is wild caught and used to rock grazing I suppose.

The chiller is a little story: So I called the guy to go by and get it and he said bad news he cant get it out of the stand cause its too big! haha. So he has to wait until the whole tank is broken down which will take a few days. So he is going to have it ready for me on Friday and throw in a free 60g tank for free. pretty nice! Oh and its a 1/4hp not a 1/3 made by....hmmmm... I wrote it down....aqualogic.

I dont know if I can fit a 60g tnak in my honda civic!! I doubt it. Ill probably just tell him Ill pass If I cant get it in the car. Although I didn fit my 55g in there just fine and I assume they are both 48"??

OH! And I still havent got my jbj auto top off in the mail yet !!! Jeez, thats what I get for ordering on ebay from Missouri. Im such a cheap ass.

And I went under the house and ran ethernet from the router to my room, it worked yesterday and now I moved the cable over to the desk vs. behind where the tank is now, and it wont work! So I have to use the computer in the parental units bedroom! Lame. I have no idea why it wont work now. Guess Ill be going under the house diving again!

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Just be patient with the flame. It's been through a lot lately and it's just getting used to it's new surroundings. I bet in a day or two or three, it will eat everything you throw in the tank.

A 60g and a 55g tank are exactly the same size EXCEPT the 60 is 2" taller I believe.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

You should be able to. The 55 and the 60 are the same width and length. The 60 is just 2" taller from top to bottom.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Terry: My current stand is only 36" thats why I was saying I couldnt use it.

I tried feeding the new fish again and he didnt eat. I dont think he understand how to eat in captivity. He is constantly swimming arund at looking at the piece of LR and the foam filter I have in there and sometimes takes a nip at them. But when I put food it and its floating past him he is oblivious. I am going to the store after work to pick up some magnesium, and nori. I will try cliping nori to the glass and LR.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Thanks JAK.

News Flash: I am an idiot. I was testing MG yesterday with my salifert kit and thought I had negative MG or 0 mg. The equation you use is (1-test outcome)x1500. Well I was pluggin in 1.75 but I was supposed to be using .175!! haha. That gives me 1237 and I should have at least 1250 so I am slightly low but better than 0!! haha.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Update: NEW CORALS!!! Yay. I went to a guys house on my way home from work to buy a favia. It is red and green and he had a huge candy cane for cheap too and threw in for free a pulsing xenia and a SPS, I think birds nest? No idea about sps's.

Top down in tank

This thing has about 12 polyps! He gave it to me for $20 or $25 cant remember too excited! haha

Top Down in tank

Here is a shot of the left side of the tank where most of the stuff is:

I shoved the candy cane in a hole and placed the favia on the rock. Then I took out two pieces of LR and superglued the birds nest and pulsing xenia (dried the foot off with a papertowel first) to the LR. That was kinda fun. I think I did a good job and will now glue the monti cap to a peice of LR since it was on the sand today.

The bubble coral is all closed up? I will try to feed it today and see if it perks up. Been about a week since last feeding for it. Also got some nori and the angelfish didnt go for it then I soaked some in garlic guard and still nothing! So I got some of the frozen pigmy angel food and soaked it in garlic. When I put it in the water he gets excited but I dont think he knows where its coming from because he doesnt go for it? Darn it! I smashed some of it on the LR because he picks at the LR and the glass bottom of the tank but he still didnt go for it! I think he is slowly eating the food because he keeps picking at the bottom of the tank and the food settled there so I guess thats kinda good....

Time to go for a run.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

OK, after my run I fed some of the corals. Here are some pictures.

And then for some reason my bubble coral has been closed up since the move so I gave it some food thinking it would like it but it didnt take it and the snails invaded! haha:

They stole the food right off the coral! hahaha, coolest thing ever. I thought they would get stung to death but apparently not.

Anyways after today I feel like I have real reef tank. Good amount of stuff in there now. Tomorow I am hoping to get frogspawn which I have really wanted very badly. Love the way it looks and neither LFS has had any ever for sale. ONly in the display tank.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Today I stopped by a guys house and picked up two heads of frogspawn...finally!! I love this stuff, soo cool.

I still cant et the angelfish to eat. I rubber banded nori to the rock and even smached food into crevases on the rock. Both were in garlic first. He didnt go for either. Upon testing his water I did an immediate water change of about 3-4 gallons. It had about .5 ammonia and also some nitrites. I didnt think there would be that much since I used a big piece of LR in there! Yikes. So I will test again in a bit after the water is mixed well.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Try the nori without the garlic.
Maybe it doesn't smell right to it if it was wild caught.

Primo candy canes by the way.

Re: 50g FOWLR Setup

Thanks Victor. I finally had some time to just sit and try to figure the food thing out. As I observed the fish I noticed when I approach he comes to the glass so I know he recognizes me as a food source. But he also goes to the surface. So I assume maybe he was fed flakes. I dont have flakes though. I tried sinking pellets after that observation with no luck. Then the frozen angelfish food with no luck. Then I put some frozen non thawed formula one in so it would float and he nipped at it at the surface a few times. That was good news. But then I put in some frozen mysis and he went nuts. He loves the mysis. He swims all over to get them. This is very good news as far as starving goes!

Now I just need to eventually get him to eat the angelfood formula so he will have a balanced diet!
