Re: STT to VT

looking great Drew, i love that kind of tank.

because of manti shrimp the following tries, take a long drink glas .... should be so long as possible. there in you give a piece of mussel or shrimp or something like that. best of all you put the glass to a LR, maybe on the left from the Gorgon (right on the first cave) so the manti can go in. should he go in there, he came never out. I have caught so already crabs and shrimps. good luck

Re: STT to VT

Drew,
The aquascaping looks really good!
I like the caves, overhangs and the flat rock platforms/shelves.
You have a lot of great place to put corals!

Re: STT to VT

Thanks everyone, I'm actually really pleased with it. As Dentoid says I'm sure things will change as things are added.

Couple more pics, plus a new hitchhiker! Anyone know what this red stuff is?

Re: STT to VT

The red specimen looks like a colonial tunicate, but then again it could be sponge. At any rate it's groovy man!

Re: STT to VT

Looks great Drew! I also think that your new hitchhikers are sponges considering the fast growth rate. As far as the CC, I think the jury is out on this one. Both finer grain sand and crushed coral have thier benefits and drawbacks, but CC is the way to go imo. Sorry it was such a pain to remove it. Some of the benefits of CC: better environment for microfauna, better circulation providing some water turnover to more anaroebic regions where most of your beneficial bacteria colonies reside (more efficient biological filtration). Microfauna living in the substrate will also process much of the organic material that gets trapped beneath the surface.

Re: STT to VT

Fish I'm currently looking to research for my tank:

Foxface rabbitfish
Powder Blue tang (smaller than blue tang)

Any info on compatibility or people's experiences with these two living together would be appreciated!

Apparently the slick, smooth sides of the glass prevents them from getting a foothold, but that only works for crabs. Mantis shrimp can swim and move quickly with one flick of their tail. They can not be caught in an open container, it must have a trap door or you must be present when they go in so that you can somehow trap them in there. Anyone that ever caught a mantis in an open container was lucky. Are you still unsure if you have a mantis?

Re: STT to VT

I've not seen him, so I'm getting hopeful its a pistol shrimp. Things have been a mess for days due to the aquascape but I do still have an occasional clicking sound.

I feel like critters must be getting hungry at this point. I've been using DTs every other day 1ml. I've got a lot of small starfish and crabs and my pistol/mantis that I feel might need something more substantial - what do I feed these guys that I cant see?
