Sorry I am late to the party.
That is some awesome growth in a year.
Everything looks fabulous. Can't wait to see it in another year or two.
Great job!!!

Re: STT to VT

Hi everyone - just stopping in to report a massive cyno invasion. It started as a very small patch in the top of the tank and when I got back from vacation has covered every rock and killed a small sps frag.

I believe the problem to be the lack of a chiller and high 84+ degree water temps.

I'm turning off the MH and one of the VHO bulbs for the next couple days. I'll run just the 'blue' VHO.

I added a fan to try and keep temps down.

Tonight I'll do a 15% WC and vacuum as much out as I can.

Hope everyone is having a great summer.

Drew

Re: STT to VT

Way bummer Drew, what's the source of your nitrates/phosphates?

Re: STT to VT

Not sure Craig. They test 0 or as close to 0 as I can tell. I'm going to try and change my filter sock more frequently - perhaps it is the source.

Re: STT to VT

Hi Drew .... tries to change the conditions in the tank (more or less salinity or higher or lower temperature) this often helps in this kind of Cyanos.

Re: STT to VT

Ther cyano is holding the nitrates and phosphates, thus the 0 readings. removing it will export those nutrients. The filter sock is a good start, sponges are also collectors. Increased flow and new lights often help with the cyano.

Re: STT to VT

Hi,

I'm seeing improvement after adding a lot of cooling via fans and dropping the temperature from 84-85 back into the 77-79 range.

I sucked out cyano a couple times to export the excess nutrients.

Thanks Heinz and Craig.

Re: STT to VT

I found the source of my cyno problem today.

My DI cartridge was totally used up. I have a color changing unit from Airwaterice but I did not notice that the color had changed.

I was doing big water changes to try and remove excess nutrients when in reality I was just adding more as my top off water was bad.

Lesson learned. I installed all new filters today and flushed my current fresh water container. Tomorrow's topoff will be with good water and hopefully things will clear up.

Here are some photos of corals in pretty good shape, although you'll notice oxygen bubbles from the cyno and some bits of hair algae around.

My duncan has gone from 3 heads to more than I can count, all packed right together.

Nice shots Drew and congrats to find the cause of the cyano problem.

Re: STT to VT

Thanks Heinz! I made it over towards you a few weeks ago!

Greg - I fed it a lot initially and it sprung almost 2 dozen heads directly surrounding the existing 3 heads, no branching at all. I thought I'd let it go with out food for a while in hopes that it would branch 'reaching' for light. No luck, so I'm back to feeding it again.

I have some raw shrimp that I bought from the grocery store, I keep it frozen. I cut the shrimp into very small slivers, grab each one with my reaching 'tongs' and hold it near the duncan. it's tentacles will grab the shrimp right out of the tongs.

I feed my frogspawn the same way.
