Different strokes for different folks. In my book...yes you can overskim....I am a lover of gorgs, fans and softies. I don't keep a single sps.
I upgraded from a 55 to a 120 and didn't add a single coral or fish for a whole year. I wanted to see how the coral I had responded to the upgrade in light and watch for growth . I'm a slow go kinda gal, well it's not like I drink my beer like that or anything...
I'll check out the differences between the Rio 1400 and Mag 3.

Re: Kim’s 120 Possibilities

um, what I do sometime to lower flow is find a piece of small tubing and line the pump out let, or even connect 2 tubes with a smaller one unless you have a lirrle valve laying around, one other thing comes to mind with skimming like this is water clarity, watch you dont burn anything with the increased par

Guilty here too.

I like fat fish.

Great point, Sas. Increased clarity can lead to sunburn.

Re: Kim’s 120 Possibilities

10-4, I'll go an hour less on the HQI's for a while.
I'm gonna run with Doni and do water changes with my skimmer until it breaks in. I know they tend to run wet, I had one before. I just have never dealt with a MAD foaming skimmer before. I've got 20 gal of fresh saltwater mixed up at a specific gravity of around 22. I put gallon marks on a 4 gallon water jug and I will replace fresh salt water with every gallon pulled out of the skimmer.

Thanks for putting my nerves at ease, RS ~ the collective mind.
Thanks all.

Re: Kim’s 120 Possibilities

Keep an eye on the salinity in your tank too. Test it before adding in the fresh saltwater. You might need a lower salinity make up water to keep the salinity in the tank the same.

Re: Kim’s 120 Possibilities

10-4 I figured I could dilute easier than increase. I'll take a peek off my refractometer and keep it in check.

Hahahaha! not yet, but I'm home today with maintenance men for the house so, I'll run this puppy all day. I'm even prepared to mix another 20 gallons of salt water for replacement if need be.

Guess what I did after tuning the skimmer off last night and heading to bed? I even chuckled as I walked to the frige..... I splashed the tank with a bit of phytoplankton
My gorg and tunicate opened up wide.

Re: Kim’s 120 Possibilities

Well folks, my skimmer has not subsided. I use wet web media as a reference for most everything...besides my references here at RS. Here is my reply from the staff and beyond that a response from Aqua C. I'm still trying to work out the bugs..

Remora C Pro Skimming Wet, Very Wet – 04/28/08
Hello WWM,
<<Hiya Kim...Eric here>>
I recently purchased a Remora C Pro w/ a Rio 1400 for my 120 gallon tank.
<<Good skimmer and great people (Jason and Steve) and service>>
I am not using any other pump parts, only vinyl tubing and snap-lock hose clamps to connect the pump to the skimmer.
<<Okay>>
My tank is healthy and I perform 30% bi-monthly water change consistently.
<<Excellent>>
This tank is 1.5 yrs and has gone skimmerless since inception.
<<I see>>
I upgraded form a 55 that was also skimmerless for 5 yrs. I hooked up the skimmer, raised the cup to its highest position and screwed the injector screw in as far as it will go. Here is the problem, I was pulling soooo much water out, I had to make 20 gallons of saltwater to replenish the amount that was being pulled out.
<<Hmm…certainly not desired (or typical) performance>>
The skimmate was clear with just the slightest ting of yellow.
<<Indeed…something amiss here>>
I will need to mix another 20 gallons to continue skimming.
<<I would remove the skimmer for the moment, until the issue can be resolved>>
I posted on several forums with very little help, I Googled and did not find any similar experiences.
<<This last is a good sign [grin]. As stated, this is not typical performance of this product>>
I need help.
<<Well Kim, I can only guess but if you didn’t inadvertently hook up the venturi fitting (not used with the RIO pump), perhaps the problem is with the injection port, preventing the creation of a fine and forceful enough spray for proper bubble formation. I suggest you contact AquaC (I will CC them here as well), and let Steve help you troubleshoot the problem (info@proteinskimmer.com)>>
TIA,
Kim

And from Aqua C.

Hi Kim,

Eric from WWM forwarded me your message, and I can help you out. It sounds like the skimmer may be reacting to something in the water, causing a "soapy" effect. Products such as water conditioners that "replace slime coating" (Stress Coat, Prime, Novaqua, Aqua Safe, etc.), antibiotic, red slime and parasite treatments, SeaChem calcium products, trace element blocks, and 2-part epoxy can have this effect. Let me know if you're using any of these. Thanks!

My response to the later is....I am not using any of the products you list here. The only media used in my tank is carbon, I use Tropic Marin salt, have an auto top off bin and a chiller. Thats it.

So, we'll see what comes back......
