Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Great news! I just came home with a pair of false percula clowns! I'm acclimating them now, and they seem pretty hyped up to get out of the bag! I hope there are no clown/chromis issues!

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Update: They're doing well, although they seem to be picky about what they eat. I'm trying to feed nutrafin max flakes... the chromis/snails/crabs/shrimp all love it, but it seems as though the clowns don't care too much for it. any ideas on what to feed?

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Try the mysis. Lots more nutrition than brine.

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Tried mysis shrimp today, and at first it seemed as though they loved it, but after a couple pieces.. they'd suck in a piece, only to spit it out. they're almost as finicky as my girlfriend's cat! that's terrible!

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Have the small brown things coming out of the top of your zoas grown any?

I'd suggest getting them out of there. They are a type of hydroid.
I had them in my tank and they spread like wild fire.
They sting and irritate other corals.

Yea, they sure have, not a mass amount, but they have. thanks for the tip! I'll snap a pic of them before i cut them out tomorrow! Any special way of getting them out so i don't make stew and have them multiply all over? in other words can i just pluck them up... or should i kill them somehow without disturbing them? Thanks!

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Pull them SLOWLY.

Get as much of that "thread" as you can. If some of it gets loose and floats around, get it!

Being on that rock with those nice zoas I wouldn't try anything else.
I've used kalk paste to kill them... but it took 3 or 4 applications to finally get rid of them.

It looks like those are on a broken piece of coral... if they are, I'd make the zoas shrink up, then I'd take the piece out of the tank and put it in a small bowl. That way you can see it better. Get as much off it as you can, use tweezers and a magnifying glass, then rinse it with tank water before putting it back in the tank.

Yea... it sounds like a pain... but I'd rather do that now, then have to deal with them after they get a foot hold.

That may not be too easy, as the polyps have started to grow onto the surrounding rocks... literally fixing their main rock to the others...

Here's a neat nighttime video for anyone interested Show's my clowns cuddling with their favorite coral!

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

I haven't plucked the hydroids yet, I'm honestly scared to do it, since i'm leaving for poland for 3 weeks tomorrow. Maybe I'd be better off to just wait till I return? I sure hope everything makes it okay through the vacation!
