Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Keep any powerstrips or plugs up off of the floor preferrably with a drip loop. Salt water and electricity do not go well together. Interrestingly enough we recently re-did all our timers etc and hung them on the wall inside the stand. The next week my husband managed to flood the whole house from the ro unit. Boy were we glad the power strips were no longer lying on the floor. Glad we have tile floors as well.

You know, I was about to do that today, but one thing held be back. The power inverter for the lights in the canopy cranks out some pretty good heat, and it's going through a timer, which you can see in the photograph. This just seems like a weak point in the system to me, and having heat contained in a wooden area like that scares be a bit... I'm not sure what quite to do yet... Thanks for the input so far!

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

The owner of my LFS has a theory that many fish and coral losses are the results of putting hands and arms in the tank. He recommends keeping ones hand/arms out of the tank, as do I, for many different reasons. I have a long plastic pole with a removeable sponge attachment as well as a razor attachment, made specially for aquarium useage.

Cougra has given some great ideas. If you aren't familiar with the algae magnet, you should get one. It's one of the greatest inventions in aquarium hobby history. Try to get the one where the inner scrubber magnet floats to the surface if it becomes detached from the outer magnet. That way if it becomes detached, you don't have to reach in to fish it out. Also make sure that themagnet is rated for the thickness of your glass.

BTW-Nice brain!

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Totally agree about the ballasts in an inclosed area. Our our outside the stand on the back so we just drilled a hole for the cords. The ballasts are also raised off of the floor to let the air cool them. I think I have some pics somewhere. I can look.
Other than a mag float my best friend for keeping hands out of the tank is a long claw thing that we got at the lfs once. It's great for pulling things out of the tank without your hands going in.

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Hey Guys, Came back from the lfs a little while ago, and picked up a pingpong sized LR with coraline growth and 3 yellow polyps, I got it for $5 bucks figuring they would spread. also, the skimmer is supposed to come tomorrow, so i'll be able to set things up, all there is left to decide is wether or not to get a glass top for the aquarium? I'll post a pic of the polyps and the new equipment set up sometime tomorrow!

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

I would not get a glass top. Use eggcrate instead. Leaving the top open will give you more air exchange and more oxygen in the water. Also depending on your lighting you can significantly reduce heat in the tank by having fans blow over the top.
Can't wait to see the pics of your purchase. The price was certainly right.

Wouldn't eggcrate restrict a lot of the light? I'm up for leaving the top open all together, my only concern is getting salt deposit on my brand new aqualight and I was somewhat considering a bluespot jawfish... darn lil jumpers

and yep... cant beat $5 for a nice little frag! (pictures tomorrow)

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

I'm going to Home Depot this weekend for some egg crate to cover my tank. Recently, my Midas Blenny jumped out to be received by my cat! Apparently it doesn't cut down on that much light, so I've heard.

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

While it does cut the light some, it is really not very much and well worth not losing fish to carpet surfing. We were even able to find some that is reflective and that makes the water kind of shimmer a bit. Almost any fish will jump in the right situation.

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Andy here are some pictures of my newly aquired egg crate. It does cut down on the light abit, but I think it's going to be ok. The grid openings are 5/8 of an inch and it is a 1/4 inch in thickness. Pretty unobtrusive, I'd say.

Re: Andy's 29 Gallon Reef

Alright, I'm back! sorry about the abscense, but I had the most miserable day yesterday... some type of stomach flu made me unable to drink or eat anything and from about 8 pm to 5:30 am i was up like a drunk infront of a toilet, minus the alcohol... it was miserable to say the least... but at any rate, the protein skimmer did come yesterday, and hopefully today will be the day i can get things going again, and also have a new photo of the small frag that I picked up!
