Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

Thanks Lynn!

I'm slowing getting there...now I just need to beat this cyano problem. Water tests today show everything is good, not sure what's keeping it alive!

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

A very nice build indeed. The cyano is killer to get rid of. when it forms on the sand try to scoop it out gently as a whole. or suck it out with a syphon. try not to stir it as that will sometimes keep it in the system. do you have any sand sifting stars? they are great from keeping the detrius off the bottom which i think is what the bacterium feed on. there is also a site Geothermal Aquaculture Research Foundation Home Page I highly recomend you getting a pound (or 10 in your large tank case) of their GARF grunge to put over the bottom of your tank. That will help kick in your sands ability to help you get rid of that bacteria. Just my 2 cents. Nice tank and stand by the way. You have some nice carpentry skills (I acn't spell)

Oh yeah, any more pix?

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

Thanks TurboIS....wish I could drive a lexus (-;

I will be doing a round of siphoning and rock cleaning today.

I have been removing the sand, rinsing it and letting it dry before reintroducing it into the system.

It seems like a never ending battle!

No new pics as of yet. I think I will re-scape a little after I scrub my rocks out of the DT so maybe some new shots later today or tomorrow.

I am in Canada so I doubt I could grab some of that GARF. I have been thinking about the sand sifting stars though.

...oh and I can't spell or type, so don't worry about it!

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

Despite a few issues here and there I am still slowly moving forward well at the some time losing my mind!

Still battling cyano to some extent and had some water clarity issues that seem to have cleared up after a 20g water change. I have a a bucket of Tropic Marine Pro slat coming and will ditch the Reef Crystals for the time being and see how it works out. I have dropped feeding only cyclop-eeze flakes once a day as well.

I picked up a few new additions this weekend. I wnet in hunting for a new fish and it turns out my LFS just picked up some Salifin Tangs...I guess they don't come around much so I picked on up. I also saw a little pink Ricordea Yuma that I thought my girlfriend would like to I grabbed that too.

The tang took right to picking at the rocks within a few minutes of entering the tank and seems to be making out great. It has a few "scuff" marks on it side (you can see them in the photo) but I am guessing that is from transport and all behavior is normal. I picked up some garlic drops to add to the feed and will see of that helps at all.

It was tough to find a happy place for the small ric. After a few attempts it seems to have stuffed itself half inside a small hole in one of my rocks and moves a little in and out depending on the lighting.

I took the photo in one of its temporary resting places before it decided to tuck itself away.

Im still a little while away from being able to get some good full tank shots....looking to add a few more corals but things are definitely more lively in there these days. Soon I hope I can stop the constant work on the tank so I can clean up my room and just enjoy the view!

Till next time....cheers.

Red Slime Remover/Euro-Reef Gate Value

I did it against some recommendations...I doesd with Red Slime Remover! I just wanted some help to kick the cyano problem. I did this about 24 hrs ago and see no noticeable change. Now I'm debating in hitting it with the second dose or just leave it. I am so surprised this stuff isn't working! I must have a resistant strain of cyano or something! If I could get my hands on my hair I will be pulling it out!

I have also jsut got my Tropic Marine Pro salt mix....maybe this switch will help.

Lastly, I just picked up the Euro-Reef gate-value addition for my skimmer. It is quite a big set up but seems to be pretty slick. All those using a ER skimmer I would suggest taking a look. Simple and easy adjustment of skimming with the twist of the value handle....much easy and more accurate than that stand pipe. I will take a pic later today.

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

Cyano is a bacteria. I have completely cured my system of this by using Metronidazole. This is not the cure though. Finding out the source is the cure. The majority of people that have this are dealing with poor flow and poor top off water. If you are using ro/di water you need to check you filters.

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

FFRANKIE,

I have looked at everything...and have many threads on this lol...I've increase flow, am using RO/DI water, reduced feeding and am running phosban. I think I am being a bit impatient but I have had this in my tank (even before livestock was added) for 3 months now.

I haven't heard of the drug you referred (Metronidazole)? Where did you pick it up and how did you use it?

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

Finally got a round to taking a few pics between watching Tiger in the PGA Championship.

Earlier this week I picked up a nice branching hammer coral from Swissguard as well as 25 nassarius snails to bump up my cleanup crew. Here's a shot of the hammer with some button polyps attached to the stem.

As an update on my Sailfin Tang, I didn't take him out of the tank as I couldn't get him into a QT without stressing him out too much. He is hanging in there and still eating like a horse. I'm still not 100% sure as to what is wrong with him, but he has a small amount of fin erosion now as you can see, but I think he is getting healthier rather than worse at this time.

Lastly a few FTS's.

My Cyano is still there but not growing like it used to. I did switch to Tropic Marine Pro salt and since then is has really slowed after only a 15g change. It really mixes much cleaner than the Reef Crystals, so hopefully this is the final piece of hte puzzle to help put cyano behind me.

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

I dose the food with Selcon, Zoe, and Garlic each and everytime and my tangs look fantastic. Try soaking the food in those and see if that helps you tang.

AWESOME TANK BTW!!!

I'm actually jealous! And I'm REALLY jealous of your PATIENCE!!!
