Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

We did the North American qualifier and finished 3rd...but there hasn't been an eco-challenge since...Mark Burnette is making too much money with Survivor etc to worry about eco-challenge anymore. I have done a lot of other big races similar all over the world though. Have been retired from it for about 5 years now.

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

is the tank sitting directly on the metal or are you putting styrofome between tank and tubing.

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

That is what I was trying to figure out Vic. I went with some 1/2 styro.

Here is an update after the shopping spree!

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

the 1/2" styro should be sufficient

Vic,

Sorry I had started a thread asking plywood or foam for under tank support. That is what I thought you were responding too. Just picked up the styro yesterday.

Cheers,
Jayme

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

Day one of stand construction under my belt. I have the bottom and sump supports cut, the main facing pieces and the top/bottom trim. I will have to head out to get some more trim to finish and I am waiting for a magnet delivery today. The magnets will be used to hold all the face pieces to the metal frame. This way all side will be fully removable if necessary. Here are a few photos of the progress.

Cheers,
Jayme

That will look awesome once you get that whole thing done! Can't wait to see the whole process progress!

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

Ok...wow, what a chore.....especially when you are not a carpenter! After multiple trips to home depot I have almost completed the stand. Here are a few shots of it before painting. I was planning on staining it but the wood didn't take as well as I had hoped so I am just going to paint it black.

Each side of the stand is attached to the frame using magnets. There are a few fit issues, but it seems to work well and be very sturdy.

Cheers,
Jayme

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

looks like the top of the cabinet extends past the frame by a few inches...why is that? do you intend to cover up the view of the sand bed?

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

With the addition of 1/2 styrofoam and the trim on the bottom of the tank the sand bed will still extend past the trim.

Re: 90 Gallon Starphire Start-up

The moment of truth is getting closer! Here are a few shots of the painted stand the th RO/DI unit I have routed from my kitchen into the closet of the room the reef will be in.

Painting the stand was just about the least fun thing with this project so far. Trying to make sure everything is covered evenly and perfectly is quite a challenge. Lighting in the room stinks too, so that didn't help. I ended up sanding all the edges of the trim, partly for looks but it also saved me having to re-paint some of them....I think it looks pretty slick now....but I am just glad it is done.

Plumbers are en route as we speak so more photos to come once the work is completed.

Cheers,
Jayme
