Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

I'll look closer at my electric bill. It goes way down in winter because we heat with gas. I'll do a year to year comparison and let you know.

Wow! That is some Duncan colony! Someday mine will look like that.

I love the progression series of photos of the lights.

I am going back through your chronicle to see what you ordered from ScubaDrew/NorthEastCoral and I haven't found it yet. Is it in a different thread?

Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

Actually, I have the Acro frags in my 20 gallon "frag" tank. I'm trying to see if I can grow them out before I try them out in my main display. Besides that I'm trying to get my 20ppm nitrates down in mt 90 gallon.

Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

Yeah, I like to feed. I have cut down on the feedings considerably. It's killing me! I feel like I'm starving my fish.

I've started using AZNO3. It's been about 2 weeks. I am using half the recommended dosage and there has been no problems with the fish or corals. In fact, there has been no change in the tank clarity either. It may take longer this way, but I'm interested in the outcome using it in this way.

Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

I know what you mean my friend. I cut back on feeding and I KNOW my fish are P.O.'d at me. Especially Scotty (the rabbitfish), at feeding time he nearly jumps out of the water at me, it's a matter of time before he gets me I know. The tank IS better off for it though,... I have to keep telling myself that. We Are NOT Starving Our Fish! ......man that's tough!

Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

Remember, no matter how hard they plead or how sad Scottys spotty looks,
under feed. They'll thank you later.
I just realized we are like Jenny Craig for our fish.
Hmmm. Do I charge them weekly or monthly?
How do they pay? In mysis?...

Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

How long ago did you start cutting back on the quantity of food? Has it made a difference in your nitrates?

It has only been about two weeks. I haven't noticed a difference. Perhaps
I should cut back some more.

Thanks for stopping by Melanie, Drew, Victor and Greg! It's comforting to know that you are looking out for me!

Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

Just stopping by to say hi to everyone who hangs out with Scott!

Scott when you cut back on your fish feeding, did you cut back on your DT's, oysters, et. al too?

Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

Wouldn't it take a while for the actual Nitrates to go down just due to cutting back on the feeding? Maybe I'm looking at it wrong but in essence you're waiting for what's hidden in there in the nooks and crannies to be slowly broken down through the whole process. In a healthy tank that should be a couple of weeks start to finish leaving an elevated level of "Trates" until they are exported.

So AM I looking at this from the wrong angle?

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!
