Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

Mike, the Vortech pump is very easy to pull apart. The inside propeller and housing are just plastic with a magnet. The mechanical part of the pump is on the outside. Electromagnetic forces drive the propeller.

Victor, Drew and Melanie, I will be sure to keep you all posted. The light is due to be delivered on Nov. 12. I can't wait. I'm watching the tracking like a hawk!

Reza, glad you like the pump. I told you it was a great pump! I just got my wireless upgrades from Aquarium Specialty, so I'll be setting them up this weekend. Wave control will be at my fingertips!

Al, I think you are as excited as I am!

Frankie, thanks for putting in the effort to ID my clowns!

Almost time for the Solaris. I am anxiously awaiting pics. Be sure to take before and after pics when you switch over.

I would tend to think it doesn't need much cleaning then. No shaft inside the tank right? It works kind of like the magnetic stirrers used in labs?
Have to excuse my ignorance I've only seen one in person before and that was the first batch and the outside part got so hot I decided I would never get one. But apparently they have improved the product since then...

Actually the propeller is on a magnetic shaft. The electricity makes the shaft rotate. The coraline on the propeller housing doesn't bother me as much as what is growing on the propeller itself, I'm sure it cuts down on some flow. The motor situated on the outside doesn't relly get that hot. It has a safety mechanism if the motor gets too hot that causes the motor to disengage and turn off. In the past I have had trouble with this. I used to have them alternating on/off. When one was off it allowed for snails to climb into the propeller area. When the pump cycled on the propeller would get stuck and cause the motor to over heat. When the motor disengages the propeller housing they both fall off the tank. The motor has to situated so that the electrical cord is tethered above it so that it doesn't hit the floor. The housing falls into the tank. I have lost an anemone when the housing fell onto it. Now I keep them both runing continuously so that snails can not go into the housing. The only problem with that is the flow is continuous and the same velocity. With the new wireless wave contoller, wave action is programmed in and it will control the speed and duration of each pump creaating different types of wave action throughout the day.

Andy and Michael, I will be sure to post some pictures and my opinion on the new light. It should be here Monday!

Dan, thanks for stopping by! I will keep you all posted.

Re: Dentoid's Reeforama

Well I cleaned my Vortech pumps and got my wireless wave controllers set up. Here is a picture of the before and after clean-up job!

For those that have never seen this pump, here is a picture of the intratank component disassembled. The mechanical part of the pump and the cord hang on the outside of the tank. The intratank and extratank components are held by magnetic forces, through the glass, which also make the propeller spin.

Here's the pump assembled on the tank.

These are the wireless controllers. One can be set as the master pump controller and it controls the other, the slave pump. One can have up to 7 slave pumps controlled by a single master pump.

This pretty red macro algae was growing inside the propeller housing when I cleaned it. I put it in my fuge.
