| Over Achiever | Re: Dentoid's Reeforama Thanks Steve! Actually I got them for a discount on the last day, last minute at the MACNA trade show. After losing a Crocea and Derasa, I swore I would never get another clam. However, I heard James Fatherree talk on the last day of MACNA and he said sometimes it take a few tries to get a hardy clam and not to be discouraged if you lose one. So I came home wih 2 maximas!![]() |

| Dancing Mandarins | Re: Dentoid's Reeforama I have had a lot of clams - lost some, and have kept many. One of the biggest things I noticed is don't move them unless absolutely necessary. Also, if they tip on their side, try to gently right them or frequently they don't get enough light on their mantle. I have 3 maximas now (yours are amazing and I love them!!!). All have done well. I had one maxima that I loved for 2 years and then he just up and died. I was terrified it was pinched mantle, but it wasn't because no other clam died. I had a few small ones in my prop tank recently die because they were on their sides and I did not check on them for a few days. Now, I try to keep them in baskets with pebbles to anchor their feet to (humm, is it feet because it is plural? or just foots . Great clams Scott!! Your tank looks great and I get the same reaction from my nieces.

| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: Dentoid's Reeforama Side-bar: What do clams need besides great lighting? I have 2 175Watt MH and 2 VHO 110Watt super-actinics. 55 gallon up for 10 months. Just wondering. Would love a Crocea. Just not sure if I'm ready for the commitment. lol

| Over Achiever | Re: Dentoid's Reeforama You have everything you need with the MH lighting! James Fatherre wrote in his book, Giant Clams in the Sea and the Aquarium, "...for reasons that are unclear, both the crocea and maxima are considered to be the least hardy of all the Tridacnids, with maxima having the worst track record of the two." |

| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: Dentoid's Reeforama But is James objective? Or is he an importer? lol Why are they considered the least hardy? What issues do they face in the captive aquarium? If you don't mind me picking your brain Scott.
