Lynn-I decided to get rid of my orange tree sponge. I felt like I couldn't risk it fouling the tank. How is yours doing? I like the new pix.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Mine continues to do great. Haven't had the guts to cut it yet but that is on the list. I want one in my pony tank. Think it will be a great hitching post.
Sorry you got rid of yours but better that than fouling the tank.
Thanks for the compliments on the pics. Hubby took most of them since he is way better with the camera. Just too many buttons and dials for simple little me.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

LOL
Well it took me long enough to start the thread, but now that it is here I seem to always be updating. That part is easy.
I put half of the sand in the fuge yesterday. Apparently my sand rinsing skills are less than good since I cause a huge sandstorm in the whole system. Fortunately it settled down in a couple of hours. I will probably wait for the weekend for the rest of the sand so I have plenty of time to rinse it well and steal some of the live stuff from the display.
Also for an update, my new chiller was shipped yesterday. With any luck I will have that this weekend as well and then I can finally be done with the new sump/fuge/chiller setup.
I can't wait to see how it all comes together. I have already seen an increase in pods in the display though I am really not sure how this has happened so quickly.
I'll keep everybody updated.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Don't rinse the sand too much; it is best to keep the tiny particles. Bacteria will coat them and they will settle. A sand storm for a day or two will not hurt anything.

My fingers are crossed for your new chiller arriving okay!

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Hmm interresting. Maybe I did good accidentally then. The sandstorm only lasted a couple of hours so I could deal with that if there is a benefit. It's not live sand it is dry aragonite sand I bought from Fosters and Smith.
So you say just rinse it lightly? That is certainly easier and if it will have long term benefit then I'm all for it.
Should I isolate the fuge so the sandstorm stays there instead of the sump and display? That is what Frank said I should have done. I actually never thought of it, but it is very easy to do with the way we have things set up.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Isolating the fuge is a good idea but not really necessary. Just make sure there is some flow (doesn't have to be much).

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Thanks for the help.
BTW I have no idea what I was talking about when I said the upgrades were almost done. We still want to add a manifold system to get the powerheads out of the display and possibly one more project.
I would love some help with deciding on this one.
I currently do not drip kalc or do anything other than occasionally add calcium. Sunday it tested at 440 so we really are not having calcium issues righ now. With that said I have been offered a used DIY calcium reactor for free. Should I take it? Should I add it? I am thinking go ahead and take it but save it for later when I have more corals than my Pro Reef salt can keep up with.
Anybody have an opinion?

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Unless your going heavy with SPS a clalcium reactor may not be necessary unless you have low levels due to high uptake from your current set-up.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

That's the thing Craig. I don't actually think I need it now, but should I get it and then have it if needed later or let him find someone who needs it now.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

One of the great questions in this hobby similar to the lighting issue except you can't run a reactor unless you need it where excess light will not negatively effect your water chemistry. If you are going to go with SPS in the future then it may be best to aquire it now if the price is right. Decisions, decisions, deiscions, eh?
