Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

I thought it was late over there.
You are a wealth of knowledge as always. Thanks for the advice. I guess I will just leave it like it is and watch very closely.
Somehow I think I am going to be sick (cough cough) tomorrow so I can keep a close eye on things.

...... only 1 day is not that big problem for the animals.

Today I have my "Balling-nutrient solution" for the next year mixed, which is why I still awake ..... Here you can see what is needed.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Lynn,

I wouldn't leave the chiller on at all. I'd remove it from the system and test it else where. Think of it like this.. you may have gotten LUCKY to catch it this time and may not a 2nd time. Let the temp come up naturally with the ambient room temp and seriously get some sleep. Without the chiller running it should be fine.

You do need a controller. With a controller you can control the heater and chiller in sequence to REALLY have steady water temps.

Good luck and GO to bed tonight

Hey HMA.... cool photo! Did you say for the next YEAR?

Yepp, for the next year, 20 liter Balling Solution in each can. This reaches for approx. 400 days of Balling dosage (plus/minus 10 day's) incl. Trace elemets and magnesium. I have modified the Balling dosage again something and now measure also constantly magnesium and trace elements. This is called Balling complete +plus.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Thank you everybody for the good thoughts and wishes.
Sas I guess it is internal since it isn't external. LOL You should know me well enough to know I have to guess at these things since Frank puts it all together. I know the temp/ph probe I have in the fuge is a completely separate piece of equipment. The temp probe now says 75 while the chiller says 73. When I discovered the problem they said 71.9 and 68. I think I am best off leaving it there for tonight. The chiller hasn't kicked on again. Since the lights are off and the temp here is at least not hot I think I will shut it off for the night. I don't think the temp will go up much overnight but I guess I don't really know. I've already decided to stay home tomorrow. Our washing machine broke today so between waiting for the repair man and watching the tank for any deaths I think it just makes sense.
The fish were rather lethargic at feeding time. I assume it is related. Most of them did eat but not with the gusto they usually do. Everybody was still moving around though. So far so good..

Heinz, now you have me really curious. That lasts you a year? For all of your tanks or just the 115? Do you have any idea what it costs to make up a batch? I read a bit about it when you posted before but somehow I didn't realize that one batch lasted that long. Now you have me very curious. I see myself following the link and reading up on it tomorrow.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Well what's the status this morning?

Being lethargic is normal for a temp reduction. As the temp slowly comes up and they get over the shock of it I think most will be back to normal.

Please keep us posted

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Well I went ahead and left the chiller set at 75 for the night. I think I am going to put it back to normal now. Lights don't come on for a couple of hours so of course everything looks awful. Believe it or not the worst is one of my hairy mushrooms. I saw most of the fish this morning so hopefully they will all be out an about when the lights come on. My serpent star is out in the open which is very unusual but he is still moving a bit. I am pretty worried about him but all I can do is watch and hope. Haven't seen the sand sifter but that is not at all unusual.
I'll update again in early afternoon after the lights have been on for a bit or when I see something either good or bad.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

What's the water temp?

Just in case, keep an eye on your water parameters. It's possible you may get a mini-cycle if you loose something hidden during this.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

It is 76 on the chiller and 77.4 on the temp probe. I never noticed how far off the two are since I usually only watch the probe and pretty much ignore the chiller. That is part of why this is puzzling. AFAIK nobody has touched the chiller in months.
Hopefully I can prevent any type of a cycle. That is pretty much why I am home today. I want to keep a close eye on things and if I lose anybody remove them before they can do any damage.
I already have the qt cycling in preparation for the new seahorses so if somebody doesn't look good but is still alive I can move them there for close monitoring.
I guess I won't know if I lose a few snails but other than that and the sand sifter I should be able to notice anybody not out an about by mid afternoon. Then if needed I will go on a search mission.
The hippo tang seems to be the worst of the bigger fish but I think he is just chilly. Only time well tell how bad this really is.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Sounds like so far you're doing well. That was a significant temp drop but it could have been worse.

The good news about a "Controller" is you can set the "better ones" up for alarms. It would have alerted you had the temp went too far south either via email or I think even TXT/pager.

I think you're on the GOOD side of it. There may be some "effects" of the drop but if everyone made it through the night you should do ok. As long as you don't have a massive "fauna" die-off you probably wont have anything major to contend with. Just be watchful (like you weren't going to anyway) and keep us posted.

Also good luck with the washing machine
