Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Some very nice photos Lynn. Your tank looks great and has an excellent variety of corals and fishes. One of these days I'll learn how to take pictures.

LOL. When you learn will you please teach me. I take about 100 pics to get one decent one. Most of the good ones on my threads were taken by my husband. He understands the camera stuff much better than I do.

I think I could learn how to use my daughters Canon if I would read the manual but I don't seem to be able to find the manual. Maybe I'll look online.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Well the next couple of days should be interresting in the reef. We may have killed it all. I noticed earlier that several corals were pouting. I thought it was a bit odd that they were pouting at the same time but of course I was doing other things so I really didn't give it much thought. I just went over to give the tank it's evening top-off and glanced at the ph and temp meter like I always do. The temp showed 71.9. My first thought was that the meter was broken. Then I put my hand against the glass and it was definitely chilly. I went over to the chiller and somehow it was on 68 degrees. Obviously I turned it off.
Anybody have any suggestions of what to do or am I best off just letting it gradually warm up and hope for the best? Right now everything looks alive but the leathers are all pouty. Not any worse than they get when they pout for no reason but pouty none the less. The fish are swimming around and the clams are open normally and look fine.
I am thinking any drastic action I take is likely to make things worse so my instinct is to let it be and let the temp go back up on it's own.
I guess I finally know if the chiller is big enough to bring down the temp on the seahorse tank. If it can bring the reef down to 72 then it can keep the pony tank there.
I wish I had some idea how it got that way though. I haven't gone back to investigate if it is broken or if somebody did something or what.
Hopefully everything will not die. Obviously I will keep a close watch for any fatalities in the next couple of days so they can be removed promptly and not cause further problems.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Lynn, just let it warm up gradually. I have had my leathers down lower than tat and they do fine. Just bring them up slowly so they can adjust along the way. The rest of the tank me pout for a bit but should recover.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Jus a hunch but I'd think let it gradually warm up. with the chiller off the room temp will bring it up slowly. I think that's on the LOW side but not the EXTREME side. Remember at times in nature cold fronts and cold currents do happen.

good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

The thing I am most worried about is the large temp swing. The reef is usually between 79 and 81 so that is a 10 degree drop.
The chiller has been off a half hour now and it is already up 1 1/2 degrees. Should I slow down the temp increase by gradually adjusting the chiller? That is assuming someone just changed the setting and it is not stuck on or something. I just flipped the switch and left it off.

Hi Lynn, sorry to hear of the mishap w/the chiller! The slower the better on the increase in temp. You just talked me out of getting a chiller BTW.

Hello Lynn,

I am suffering to hear from your misfortune. I had a few months ago a similar problem with my 115gal. tank, the heating failed. The temperature dropped several days to less than 24 ° C. My Gobies died, the Corals and all other animals have survived without any problem. Correct only the temperature at the chiller, nothing more. A too strong intervention is always counterproductive, but you know even the best.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

I really do need to try to figure out what happened. I stepped away so I didn't keep freaking out. Since we rarely use that room for anything but watching the fish and the boys watched the football game in there last night, I am assuming somebody hit the thermostat or something. There is nobody who would do it on purpose but I just can't see how it could have happened accidentally. Maybe it is broken. Guess I should go check. Maybe I'll put it back on like 75 for the night and turn it off in the morning. That would at least split the rise in half.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Heinz. Do you ever sleep? What time is it there?
Thanks for the help. I just went over and turned the chiller back on. It was set at it's normal 78 but was reading 70 as the current temp. I left it on with the thermostat set at 75 for now. It didn't kick back on so I am hoping it is ok. I will keep checking it throughout the night to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Now that I see the thermostat wasn't changed does anybody have any ideas what may have happened? I always assumed if the chiller broke it would just break and not cool any more. I never dreamed it could over chill the tank.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Grr. Good question. Well the chiller is about to move to the 90 where I will want it to be pretty cool all the time. If I have it set on 74 and it drops to 70 that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Maybe it is time to invest in a controller. Well the tax check will be here soon. Perhaps that is where I need to spend a few dollars.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Lynn, it is 01.40am in Europe.LoL..... yep, sometimes i sleep but i need only 4-5 hours.

Because of the temperature increase in the aquarium. When it comes to the sea to a storm with rain, the temperature drops in the sea often by about 2 degrees. That makes to the animals not very much. Only a lasting or severe reduction of the temperature would be harmful.
