Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Glad you figured it out!

The power head idea seems logical to me...

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Unless the sand bed in the fuge is deep (2"+), more flow is not necessary IMO. A deeper sandbed may require more oxygen flowing over it to keep it from getting black sulfur dead zones. Maybe someone else can chime in on it...

If you do add a PH, use a prefilter sponge so the pods do not get sucked into it.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Well we are planning a DSB for the fuge but I think I am going to try it as is and see what happens. Fortunately with the new setup it is easy to see so i can look for the black sulfer easy enough and add the powerhead (with sponge) if needed.
Thanks for the help guys and gals.
Meanwhile stay tuned for updates perhaps later today. 3 lfs this weekend and a couple of goodies to post pics of.
Yes I am definitely an addict.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

You can add a small power head LYNN. I did. I was having a cyno issue (still do actually ) so i thought flow would help.It dosen't make any trouble though.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Oh i forgot to add:
I use crushed coral in my fuge because it's elevated and i needed good flow up through the media. But i have used mineral mud in the past and loved the results for growth on the mangroves and macro.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

I may still add the powerhead but I want to try it without first. If I start having problems it is sitting in the cabinet of unused equipment ready to go if needed. i took a lot of time figuring out a way to make sure my fuge water does not go through the skimmer and only the return pump since I am afraid of chopping up all of my pods. Pod cultivation is the primary reason I added the fuge so it is pretty important to me that they make it to the reef alive for my mandarin and scooter blenny even though both eat my frozen food.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

And now for some new goodies. If anyone can ID the orange coral I would appreciate it. I totally forgot what the guy called it though he did tell me it was very difficult. He gave me a good price though so I figured I would try. Then there is my new fire coral, my engineer goby, and some halmedia that was a really nice color.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Looks to be a Yellow Dendronephthya sp. Very difficult to keep, it eats lots of phytoplankton.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

That must be it though he told me to feed it oyster eggs and a little phyto. He was very upfront about it being difficult to keep but sold it to me for $20.00 and the pic only shows part of the rock. Since I already feed phyto for other things in my tank I figured it was worth a try. I absolutely love the color.
Thanks for the super fast ID.

No problem Lynn, good luck ! It likes strong flow and low light and AFA the oyster eggs I'm not sure if it'll eat it, from what I've read phyto is it's staple.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Very nice chronical Lynn.

Sorry you lost your clam, they require very stable and mature system, one year old or more. How big is your Engineer Goby, I had two that were 10" before they had to go back to the LFS as thety outgrew and over tunneled my tank.

I sleep 5 or 6 hours a day by the way.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Well, it was a clam we were given by someone who tore down their tank. I have another crocea and a maxima both of which are doing fine. Then again that one did fine for about 4 months, then in 2 days it was gone. The others I have had a couple of months longer. I wish I knew what happened to the one I lost. It went downhill very quickly. All my parameters were fine so I am at a loss. He was the only one on the sand so maybe he didn't get enough light. The others are on top of the rocks so maybe that is why they are still ok.
The engineer is about 4-5 inches now. I was told they get about 12 inches when full grown. We'll see how he likes my system. He was jumping so much in the bag I am terrified he will jump out of the tank despite my eggcrate.

Have you ever considered swaping out the 150MH for 250MH?
