Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Well I just added the rest of the sand to the fuge so no pics for a while. The first batch cleared in about 6hrs so I am hoping to be able to get some later today. Maybe some new full tank shots would be nice. I love the fact that you can see my tank from 3 sides. It just gives you so many more options. A completely different view from either side.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

How's the fuge coming? I'd like to convert my trickle filter to a fuge. Is it possible or is there something else I could exchange it for.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

Not sure about the trickle filter since I have never had one. My fuge is a 29g tank with about 5 inches of aragonite sand. One of tomorrow's projects is to take the live sand and macro out of my overflow and put it in the fuge. So far so good in my case. I have already noticed an increase in my pod population.
oh and sorry guys pics will have to wait till tomorrow since we just put the new purchases into the tank and they are very pouty right now plus the lights are out.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

A few new additions and a couple of losses. Lost the scissor tail and 2 chromis. Have no idea why but I am starting to suspect one of my fish or the star. Wish I could figure out who so I could move it to my new fuge. Also my long term inhabitant a scooter blenney is looking very skinny. I am going to buy some pods tomorrow and add some to the tank and some to the fuge and hope for the best. I think the mandarin is just giving him too much food competiton.
To cheer my spirits I of course had to go to the lfs. I bought 3 new chromis and one already jumped out of the tank in spite of the eggcrate. The other two are doing well and one came out for dinner a bit ago. I also got a sea pen and a Longe tentacle plate. I have been debating the plate for months and he was looking so good yesterday I could no longer resist. He is alread expanded tremendously and seems to me happy. I will try to target feed him tomorrow. The sea pen looks fabulous but I can't seem to get him to stay put. I was told to bury his foot in the sand but he keeps coming loose. I also tried placing him in several holes in rocks with the same result. It is actually kind of odd since he has had full polyp extension and looks great even while floating around the tank. I just placed him again in the sand and hopefully he will stay this time. Anybody with suggestions please let me know cause this guy is really awesome looking and I really want him to be happy. Did some re-aquascaping of both tanks today and hopefully will get pics to post tomorrow. Right now many of my corals are pouting since I moved a bunch of stuff.
That and finishing the fuge are the weekend update.
Thanks to all who are interrested.

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

So sorry to hear about your loses. I am sending you some karma for good luck with your new arrivals. I read that sea pens are difficult to keep due to their dietary needs. I believe their foot should be buried in soft sand or mud. If you're able to keep that tree sponge going you must be doing something right though. Let's see some pix.

Cool LYNN! Im sorry your lossing stuff. It alway makes me feel better to buy new stuff also
Have you ever tried to feed your scooter blenney mysis shrimp? I have one in my refugium that loves it.
Theres an article in the january Marine fish and Reef 2007 annual magazine about Fungiids, (plate corals) that was so interesting that i also went out and bought one. Mine has long tentacles and is called: Heliofungia actiniformis. prolly the same as yours. There said to be one of the hardest to keep fundiids and need really good water quality and feedings. Good luck with yours! I can't wait to see the pictures. Did you know they can move around?! See if you can get the mag. It's really interesting!

Re: Lynn and Frank's saltwater adventure.

They can move? that is really cool though unexpected. I know they need target feeding and he has been at my lfs for probably 2 months. He has grown and trhrived there so I am hoping he will be happy here. So far he looks great and started expanding almost as soon as I got him in the water. Less than 24hrs later he looks almost as good as he did at the store.
I feed the whole tank mysis on a regualr basis. The scooter was just fine for a long time. in fact he is one of the few remaining original inhabitants so I am not sure why he is so skinny now. The only thing I can come up with is that he was the only real pod eater and now he has to share with the mandarin. I just set up an awesome 29g fuge for this very reason but I am afraid I may have been too late. I am going to the lfs tomorrow and buying two containers of pods (if they have them) and add one directly to the reef and the other to seed the fuge. Hopefully with this effort I can save him since the entire house will be heart broken if he dies.

And Woodstock of course it was the one Ralph had. The one we watched eat. It just looked so fabulous Saturday I could no longer resist. He is beautiful already though I have him in the shade since I have more light than Ralph does on that tank. I didn't want to fry him and he is already expanded to about the size he was when you saw him. I will try my first target feeding with him tomorrow. I wanted to give him some time to settle in first.

I promise everybody I will take pics at least of the newbies tomorrow.
