Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

WHATEVER YOU DO, do NOT use black rubber heater hose. I killed off a whole tank with the stuff in a matter of about 2 hours! (the automotive type) I think it has something to do with the white powder on it. (looks like a mold release type agent). But something in it is highly toxic to fish.

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

Tank is full. Dust storm is about out of the way. Appears to be a small residual particles every once in a while. Filter sock is almost brown already. Need to get it washed after three days. My E. Jager heaters do no fit in my sump; and I have the small, 12", 100w heaters. I have them in my tank currently, so I think I'll have to buy a 250 watter so I only have one in the display.

Tank has 45 lbs of Fiji uncured live rock from Premium Aquatics, along with about 35-40 lbs of CaribSea reef rock. This rock is really dense. Has alot of little tiny small holes and indentions all over it.

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

I posted a thread in one of the other sections of the forum about how my Remora Pro's collection cup was filling up really really quickly. Filled up two times in about a two hour period.

Took the advice given from a select few individuals: raised the collection cup about as high as it will go.
Ran the skimmer for about two hours before bed time lastnight, and the cup filled about 1/3 full of what looked like "green tea".
I'm going to assume that is a good thing. Hopefully this skimmer will break in soon.

Tank looks great. Glad you've got your skimmer troubles under control. Green tea looking is right where you want to be!

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

Should I begin running the powerheads? Or should I wait until the sand is settled and "weighed" down with bacteria?

I plugged in one the other day and it kicked up a little bit of a sand storm.

Also, the 45 lbs of Fiji is the uncured stuff. Will I need to perform more water changes during the cycle?

The LR was purchased from Premium Aquatics. It really didn't look like it had alot of dead stuff on it. An occasional smudge of what appeared to be leftover life here and there but that was it.
I dunked the pieces in RO water and rubbed my hand and fingers on it to remove anything that was noticable and then put it all in the tank.

I assume at the worst, my cycle may take a little longer?

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

You could turn on a powerhead.. I think it looks great. Ive seen tanks that are cloudy for days.. I wouldnt do any water changes during the cycle.. Die off on the live rock will help the cycle. You dont wanna be taking out the bacteria from the water at this point.

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

April 03, 2007

Day 3:

Salinity: 1.024
pH: 8.2
Ammonia: .25
Trites: 0
Trates: 0

Remora Pro seems to be doing alot better. About time! Got a little green tea in the bottom of it and it smells nice! (not!)
I have both Maxi-Jet 900's turned on today. A little initial sand storm at first. Still small particles floating around. Hopefully the filter sock will get a hold of them or they'll settle eventually. From examining the tank, sand particles and die off from the rock, there appears to be water movement throughout the entire water column. Of course it doesn't take much water movement to move sand particles, but positioning of my powerheads seems good so far.

No air bubbles in the U-tube overflow. I'm amazed at how this device works. Gotta love physics.

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

I'm noticing brown spots appearing on the sand and rocks. Some purple and pink stuff is also starting to appear on the rocks. From what I understand, this is all normal.

Today I've noticed alot of particles in the tank water. Yesterday the water was almost perfectly clear and today its a mess. I'm wondering if its die-off and small sand that has circulated in the tanks water volume?
It may be time to grab an Aquaclear hang-on and get some sediment filtration going? Would this help?

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World
