Tank back painted black. Piece of advice: blue painters tape sucks. See the seep-through, even though I pressed it down.. nice.. not

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

Earlier in my chronicle I posted about my "DIY rock". I've scrapped this plan.
After 10 weeks or so of curing, my nephew placed a couple of small pieces in his 30g freshwater tank for decoration. A week later, fish began to die. Not sure if it was from the DIY rock or not. So, we pulled them out. I'm not taking a chance.
Going with 40-45 lbs of live Fiji, and got some CaribSea base rock to finish it off.

Steve,

LR is arriving Friday... so only a couple of days now. This tank has been sitting with its "perfectly clear water" since November :P

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

Could only get four of my T5's in the standard AGA pine canopy. For my first tank, I really didn't feel like disassembling the canopy, and DIY'ing some sort of solution, since I really don't have the tools.

So, four x 39w T5's will have to do. This should be plenty though; except for keeping SPS.

Here is the progress of my wiring. The little chihuahua was checking it out herself for her approval.

Looks like it is coming along well... I am also a struggling middle classer, so I know what you mean about taking things slow... "Patience is the key",.. lol, I have no choice in the patience matter.

Nevermind the fingerprints and dust on the tank. Its been sitting since November; including numerous trips up and down off the stand

Here are the T5's (4x39w on 2 AccuStart Triad ballasts, Tek Retro)

It looks like you've been researching since September. That is going to be a *****ing tank. You purchased a lot of things I wanted but could not afford yet. Good luck to ya!

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

Looks great! A couple of suggestions... If you plan on having any type of lighting in the sump area, you might want to get black vinyl tubing for the return pump. the clear hose will grow algae inside it and restrict the water flow dramatically.

Also, you mentioned that your son used a few small pieces of your homemade rock in his fw tank and fishes began dieing. It wasn't anything wrong with the rock. It was made for marine fish which require a very high PH. The Fw fish don't. You killed the fw fish when the PH skyrocketed.

Re: Joe's 65 Gallon Aquatic World

sasquatch: I've definately learned the hard way that prebuilt canopies have their limitations. I think next time I'll just buy a few woodworking tools and have a try at building my own stand & canopy.

lcstorc: I think she said the lights look good. So, as long as the chihuahua is happy, I'm good to go!

Wooden Harpoon: It would have taken me longer, if not for some tax money coming back this year. Gotta love loaning Uncle Sam interest free money every year.

BrothaWolf: Fill up starts after I get home from work today. Guess that gives me a reason to try to get out a couple of hours early

Woodstock: I didn't like that little piece of clear hose in there anyway. (plus that long sweeping bend can contribute to a little head loss) A couple of days ago I was thinking of some ideas to get rid of it. So, I was trying to just use a fitting along with a threaded union to hook the pump up and I ended up binding some of my plumbing and screwed it up. So I just got rid of the hard plumbing all together. I capped off the hole on the side of the sump and used tubing on the return.. all the way up. So much easier; easier to take out if I need to clean it also. Only thing is, I couldn't find any black tubing, so I got the reinforced stuff, that has the white lines in it.. So, I know its not totally see-through, but its not black. I'll just have to keep an eye on it every once and a while and gauge how often I need to clean it.
