Re: JFK_Jr's 150 Gallon Starphire

I am new to these boards and looking to get into the hobby. Let me say that you and this thread have been my absolute inspiration. It is hard for me to not go out and try to replicate your system based on the success you've had with it! In any event, this thread has helped me make a lot of choices. Thank you so much for sharing your tank. Will take me a few months to amass the equipment but I sincerely hope I can chart my success as well as you have.

Outstanding!

Re: JFK_Jr's 150 Gallon Starphire

Thanks Lorraine, Vicki, and Craig...

And as to not disappoint Terry... here are some more "showoff" pics...

Here is what I call my ying yang Monti...
I posted this on 12/19/07... check out the growth since then...

Montis love my tank...

Quote:
This is interesting... I purchased a purple grape montipora frag at my local frag swap last year and glued it in what I thought was a perfect spot. It grew nicely and started encrusting my live rock. Then all of a sudden it started to die off... not sure why, but later I thought it might have been due to it being in the path of my return pump flow. So I decided to use the shelf left behind to glue a Monti cap frag... well to my surprise, the grape monti has come back to life and is actually starting to encrust all of the previous die off. Strange...

Notice how the puple monti has filled in...

Hitchhiker rock anemone getting bigger... gotta cut back on the feedings...lol

My acan continent...

Love this shot... some macroalgae tree that my tangs pick at but can't seem to kill.

And my babies...

Re: JFK_Jr's 150 Gallon Starphire

Here's an old pic I found that shows the grape cap above... and if you notice on the right hand side, you can see the rock anemone when it was a baby!

For size reference... that frag is sitting on one fourth of a standard round frag disc.

What kind of sand do you have JFK?
Looks super white and kind of like sugar?

I used fine "Natural Sand" from a company called Bonsai American... got it either at Home Depot or Lowes... can't remember.

Re: JFK_Jr's 150 Gallon Starphire

You can use that kind of sand??? Isn't it kinda high on the silicates/phosphates? Do you vaccum it regularly? Is it mixed with anything?

It apparently works great for you. Would you change it given the option? Do you remember how much you needed for a 150 if I go that route? How deep do you keep your sand bed? Can I be any more annoying?

You have to be carefull when choosing sand as there are some that are sold at HD and Lowes that are not suitable and have the negative traits that you mention above.

The one I'm using is completely "natural" and works perfectly. I had about a 3" bed, but my pistol shrimp didn't seem to agree with me and he arranged it to his liking..

I do not vacum... stir the top occasionally to keep it groomed.

I love my sand bed... it is full of keyhole limpets and I also keep nassarius snails that bury in it. Many moons ago I had a reef with crushed coral... what a mistake that was. Now that's a detrius trapper and nitrate factory.

And you are not annoying...

I enjoy sharing what I know with others...
