My 40g stretch hex

hey guys,
I finally got my tank set up! I think it looks really good. Here's the details:
Oceanic 40g stretch hex
72lbs LR
25lbs LS
VHO Hamilton lighting (195w)
10g sump
mag5 return pump
2 penguin powerheads (will upgrade later)

I just got my first fish today, a maroon clown. I know they are aggressive but he's the only clown I'm going to keep. I would also like to keep a 6 six line wrasse, royal gramma, and possible a coral beauty. I also want to keep LPS, mushrooms, and zoas. Anyone have any ideas on what a good first coral would be? I will keep yall posted on the progression of the tank. Please feel free to always comment, tip, criticize (nicely), or anything else. Enjoy!
Steven

Re: My 40g stretch hex

I added my fist bit of livestock yesterday. The maroon clown and a green star polyp. I know gsp spread so I'll keep an eye on it but it's a good beginner and something different. I'll post a pic of the clown and then when the polyps open up I'll post a pic of them. Incidentally how long should it be before all the polyps are fully open? Enjoy the pics.

Re: My 40g stretch hex

I thought I'd post an update on my tank since it's been a while. My clown and green star polyp are doing great and all params look good except salinity which is low (around 1.018). I'm currently taking measures to slowly raise the salinity. I also have started having algae...which is normal I know but I still don't like it! I Have brown crap all over the place (diatoms I assume) but on some places, like my powerheads, it is turning into brown hair algae. I think it's about time for my clean up crew. Does anybody have any reccomendations for a good crew? The last time I did sw I had hermits and snails and the hermits ate the snails so I'm going to try to stay away from herms and do a lot of snails. Any suggestions on what snails are good and crabs (emeralds, sally light foot, etc). I also want to eventually want to get a serpant star as I have heard they are great scavengers. Also, I think I might add another coral soon to try and absorb some of the nutrients. I'm thinking either some shrooms or zoos. Alright, so this is where I will begin to need the experts so any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Will post updated pics later.

Re: My 40g stretch hex

One month in and everything is going great. I have 6 turbos and they have wiped out the algae and everything looks good. I have added a fungia and arc eye hawkfish. The clown though (maroon) has started knocking my green star polyps over and then picking at them so I'm going to try and catch him. My LFS just got a pair of black percula clownfish and I really want them ($50 for the pair...anybody know if thats a good deal). Also any suggestions on how to catch the maroon? I'll post pics soon.

Re: My 40g stretch hex

sounds like a pretty good deal on the fish, but they probably aren't true black perculas, those would be going for around 200 i think... they might be black ocellaris, or just true percs that have a lot of black... hard to tell without a picture. have you upgraded your lighting? there's not much coral you can keep well with your current setup, I believe. some of the hardier species, yeah.

Re: My 40g stretch hex

I will upgrade to mh in a year or so but right now I only want to keep LPS and softies. No SPS or clams or anything like that b/c I know I don't have adequate lighting but for LPS it should be ok I think. They are definitely not true percs that are just really black so they are probably black ocellaris.
