Phosguard

I have been having hair algae issues lately, my nitrates are close to 0. I took a sample to the LFS to check phosphates and they were pretty high...

So, the only thing I could find locally was Phosguard by Seachem. I've read up on it a bit and it seems some are concerned about it leaching potentially toxic aluminum into the water. There's a pretty in depth report about it...

Chemistry and the Aquarium

However, in the report, it states that many other items contribute aluminum such as nori and it also states that when the Phosguard was rinsed thoroughly (as instructed on the packaging), the amounts of aluminum detected were significantly lower.

I found a thread where Woodstock posted an excellent link about removing phosphates...

Chemistry and the Aquarium

Who has used Phosguard and has anyone had major problems with it?

I plan on using it temporarily as an emergency measure until I get my fuge lit and stocked with some Macro.

It would take about a week for me to get some other phosphate removing compound (such as phosban), should I wait? My levels are potentially between 1-2 mg/L. I think they are the result of some poorly filtered grocery R/O water and some potential overfeeding. Some of my corals are looking a little under the weather and I would think this may be the culprit.

Re: Phosguard

i have used it before. had no issues. but i did only use it once(once being the whole bottle until i use it up) and then switched to phosban. i noticed the phosban worked really well quickly. the phosgaurd did not do such a good job, no issue just did not get as good as results as i did with phosban.

Re: Phosguard

Thanks prow!

I think I'll give it a go (after sufficient rinsing in R/O) for the 4 days recommended on the bottle and then get some phosban to use or keep on hand if the need arises.

Some use it with no problems at all, yet a few have had problems, so it is more of a warning, there could be an issue.

Re: Phosguard

I've been using it for several months now and have had no "known" issues with it. My tank it healthier than ever right now. My algae issues were substantially lessened when I started using it. I really like the stuff. I do rinse it well before using it also.
