Need a calibration solution for your refractometer?

Ok, so I don't even own a refractometer but many of you do. Here's a homemade calibration solution that you can make to calibrate your refractometers.

Reef Aquarium Salinity: Homemade Calibration Standards by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com

Hope that it will be of some help to you folks.

Re: Need a calibration solution for your refractometer?

Thank you for this link (I read it from my chronicle when you posted it there as well.)

I don't have much faith in my own ability to make a perfect solution in a 2 liter bottle.

Come on, I know that you can do it. Just take your time and make two batches. If you did them right, the reading should be the same.

Re: Need a calibration solution for your refractometer?

As long as it's only ingredients are sodium chloride and Iodine you should be fine. Just regular table salt.

Re: Need a calibration solution for your refractometer?

Thanks Doc. I will check against this formula while the depression moves in and I get bored from being cooped up this weekend.
My refractometer instructions are to calibrate with pure water to '0' which I used my RO/DI and it seems to be on there even after a year so I am anxious to check it agaist the salt formula. Thanks for the link.
