Two Part Solution Bulk Magnesium Question

I'm mixing up the bulk magnesium recipe of the two part solution. The instructions are as follows, but they only provided me with Magnesium Chloride. Do I need to go buy magnesium sulfate or should this have read "OR"? Actually, just realized I have some epsom salts (mag sulf) so just need to know if I should add it in addition to what they provided in bulk.

*note* if you are using bulk product it is best to make a full gallon of this at a time. Use 5 cups of Magnesium Chloride and 3 cups of magnesium sulfate with enough water to make one gallon of solution.

I have used that same recipe for years. 3 cups magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) and 5 cups magnesium chloride (mag flake de-icer) per 1 gallon of ro/di water.

Well, I succeeded in mixing it up, Also mixed the calc part as well for the first time. No one warned me about how hot that mixture gets - ouch! But, all is well. Will add the mag today. My tank is becoming very demanding. I am running kalk and can't keep up with it's demands ~ wow~! It's actually kind of fun ~ I'm like a little mad scientist!

I thought the whole point of dripping Kalc was so you didn't need to supplement as much. Does it just change what you need to supplement?

Changing to the MH has really made my corals take off. I have the tanked stocked heavily. Without the kalk drip I would have to add much, much more. A few days ago I had a close call with the drip. The sensor had come off its bracket, so the autotop off came on and would have stayed on except that the osmolater has a built in safety shut off (won't let the auto topoff run very long at a time). So, no harm done to the tank!

Glad to hear that tragedy was averted.
So you are saying that without the kalc you would need to add even more.

Sorry Lynn, my post didn't post. Yes I would have to dose a lot more if I wasn't dripping kalk. My evaporation during the day keeps it dosing at a rate that is close to where it needs to be, but it doesn't dose as much at night and the levels get lower as a result.

Is this gallon one dose. ? Or is it several doses? I mean the magnesium I use is 1/3 cup per gallon of water.. I add that twice a week.( 2 gallons total)

3 cups magnesium and 5 cups chloride seems like alot. Is that one dose or several doses?. Not saying it is wrong by any means,, Just curious.

It is several doses! Good catch, I'm glad no one went and dosed their tank with this!

BTW, what mag do you use?
