Re: *Oxygen*

Okay... one hour after the MH went off (PC's were still on) at a temp of 79.5 f and a salinity of 35ppt, the oxygen tested at 5.4 ppm. I was hoping it would be higher than that since it is after the strongest photosynthesis period? I will test again in the morning prior to the PC's coming on.... and probably test it during mid MH period (@3pm) this weekend.

Boomer the "Marine Science Studies Laboratory Manual" is very informative!

You are at about 84 % saturation. 100% is about 6.4ppm

Us this for a really close reading

The formula in your new book is a more accurate measurement. The best measuremnts are baromteric pressure (book), which are better than altitude (above link).

Re: *Oxygen*

Thanks!

I was surprised when I tested it this morning (prior to the lights coming on)... 6am, temp was 78.5, 35ppt salinity, the oxygen tested at 5.7 ppm.

I do have a lighted refugium (24/7) that is filled with chaeto and other types of macro algae that would help keep the oxygen higher during the night hours.... and the temp was one degree less.

I can't wait to test it mid-day this weekend!

Re: *Oxygen*

Hey Dragon!

Well, being the unpatient person I am, I made time to test the tank today after the MH were on for 7 hrs; 80.2 f, 35 pptsalinity, 6.4 ppm oxygen.

Quote:
Dissolved Oxygen

Oxygen is critical to the survival of aquatic plants and animals, and a shortage of dissolved oxygen is not only a sign of pollution, it is harmful to the fish. Some aquatic species are more sensitive to oxygen depletion than others, but some general guidelines to consider when analyzing test results are:

5-6 ppm Sufficient for most species
<3 ppm Stressful to most aquatic species
<2 ppm Fatal to most species
The overal Oxygen tests were:

Wednesday(Sept. 6); 7:30 pm (1 hr after mh turned off) = 5.4 ppm @ 79.5 f
***tweaked the flow to create more surface turbulence***
Next morning tested:
Thursday(Sept.7); 6:00 am (only fuge light on) = 5.7 ppm @ 78.5 f
Thursday(Sept. 7); 5:30 pm (MH on for 7 hrs) = 6.4 ppm @ 80.2 f

Not bad!

I will perform the same tests on my 30 cube just for a comparison... fun, fun!

Re: *Oxygen*

Donia

5:30 pm = 6.4 ppm @ 80.2 f

Something funny here. How come ? Lights out at 6:30 PM. 1 ppm in 2 hrs is a big loss. Maybe bad test ?

Re: *Oxygen*

Sorry, the order of testing was off. I edited the above post to show the correct chain of testing.

I will run another series of tests at the same times for comparison.
