Re: TheSilverSurfer's RSM 130D

Fraser - the readings don't look bad to me, plus you're bumping the Ca & pH up to keep things in line. SPS and LPS will pull calcium out for their skeleton growth. My Ca & pH tend to drop also, and I use additives to make up for it. I make up my SW a week ahead and find that my pH drops from about 8.2 to about 7.8 during that week of aging. So now I add 1 tsp SeaChem Reef Buffer to the bucket while heating & remixing the SW right before a water change, to get the ph back up to 8.2-8.3 before I use it. Check the SW pH before you use it for a water change - that may be the reason the pH drops after your water change.

Re: TheSilverSurfer's RSM 130D

I think the reason it has been dropping is that I have been using fresh RO water for the evaporation top ups and not adding any buffers to it ... my LFS advised to mix in a buffer to the top off water so as to keep the levels more constant. I am going to give this a go and see how I get on over the next few weeks ...

I also check the Ph in my fresh SW before a WC, rather than adding buffer to top-ups..

The diary continues.

Well I have hit the 3 months mark and all is going well. The learning curve has been great and am looking forward to the next 3 months. I treated myself to another coral today .. A Euphyllia Glabrescens - Metallic Green Torch Coral - simply stunning and the image does not do it justice.....

Re: TheSilverSurfer's RSM 130D

I just did a clean out of the back of the tank as it was getting a bit manky and i removed the media rack and chemi-pure elite ... As to has been in there two months it had become quite sodden with gunk. Therefore I have rinsed it out in some tank water I removed first and the tank is now glistening more than ever.

Q. How long do people usually keep the chemi-pure elite in their tank before replacing it?

Also I just changed my water testing kits to 'Salifert' which I am finding much easier to use and all of which are giving great readings ... here are the latest water conditions after three months of setting up:

26 degrees
1.025 salinity
8.1 PH
8.75 Kdh
400 Calcium
0.1 Phosphate
0 Ammonia
0 Nitrite
2 Nitrate

Re: TheSilverSurfer's RSM 130D

Hi Fraser. I try to replace the Chemi-Pure Elite at 3 months, sometimes 4 if I get lazy. I agree on the Salifert kits - easier and more trustworthy. The readings look good to me!

Re: TheSilverSurfer's RSM 130D

I will order another another one shortly then :-).

Questions:

1. I have read people use something called Purigen ... what exactly is it.

2. In the 3 months I have been up and running the substrate has never been cleaned. I have read some people use a gravel cleaner and siphon the gravel whereas others do not touch the substrate at all? A bit confused about this?

Re: TheSilverSurfer's RSM 130D

Seachem. Purigen

Purigen® is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all others by over 500%. Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s™ impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen® darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. Purigen® is designed for both marine and freshwater

I seldom have to touch my sand (vacuum), about the only time I have, was when I overfeed, to remove some problem algae.

Re: TheSilverSurfer's RSM 130D

I do clean my substrate. I bought both the Ehiem Gravel Vac (I would not suggest it though) It's expensive and leaves the tank VERY cloudy. I then purchased just a normal (and cheap) siphon kleen similar to this one. This has done a very good job for me and I do it while doing a water change so I just discard the dirty water.
