Re: RedSea Max/ Euroreef Skimmer Page

Morning Terry,
Usually takes about 24 hours. At least that's what I have seen. Each tank is of course different.
I know Chris said his skimmer broke in very quickly! Like within hours?????? Not sure why.
At any rate, I would say today it should start! Keep us posted.

Terry,
The foam should be settling down a bit now. How is it looking?

How do you like the 250? We looked at them at the show. They sure are pretty! The perfect height too! They look more like a 80 gallon!!!
These new skimmer will be MUCH easier to get to, and you can vacuum out the chamber without taking the skimmer out! That's a big plus!!!!
thank you
Maybe I will wait to see the 250 model..

Re: RedSea Max/ Euroreef Skimmer Page

OK OK, I'm here LOL! Busy day today - morning shopping and afternoon tank work & water changes. I got home from shopping about 11am and thought I saw a hint of brown at the top of the foam. I raised up the skimmer a bit so it wouldn't overflow, and about 2 hours later I had this waiting for me! I took a pic while I had the hood off for a water change:

After about 5 hours now the skimmate has doubled in volume. redseareef - you were right on on the 24 hours! I'm hoping I can start dropping the skimmer down as it breaks in more. I also notice very few microbubbles leaving the skimmer now, and barely any at all in the RSM. I expect that to get even better with time.

I did a lot of coralline scraping today, and wanted to filter out the stuff before the tank got pink. I put my StevieT media basket back in with a bag of carbon and a blue/white filter pad on top. The Euro-Reef and media basket are a pretty tight fit. Right now I can't hook up my ATO, but If I can start dropping the skimmer & pumps there should be room for it. Here's a pretty lousy pic of the media basket right up against the right Euro-Reef pump:

Like I said the skimmer is pretty high right now, but hopefully I can start dropping it so my Osmolator ATO sensors can be put to the left of the skimmer - the skimmer pumps are too close to the surface at this time. I could pull the media basket but I like being able to run the filter pad, at least when stirring things up in the tank.

Things can only get better now - I'm impressed with the skimmer!

Re: RedSea Max/ Euroreef Skimmer Page

Terry,
Man, that's alot of skimmate for that little amount of time! Keep in mind too, that once it's fully broken in if you are not happy with the height and would like to lower it more, just drop your water level in the rear! Or raise your skimmer box! That will allow you to really drop the skimmer down.
By this time tomorrow that cup is going to be loaded!!!!!! Excellent!
I think you will get things straightened out in the back there in time. That's cool you have a few days off to monitor and familiarize yourself with the skimmer.
I really think you are going to see much more clear water conditions as well. Watch your corals closely for color lightening. You "MAY" need to cut back a tad on your run time on your lights.
Post more pics when you can. And let me know if polyp extension increases! It sure did on my tank.....

Re: RedSea Max/ Euroreef Skimmer Page

Here's a picture of mine! Did a water change and cleaned out the cup Saturday. Now, here's what it looks like today. I really think yours is going to have to play catch up, so I would think it is really going to pump out the gunk.

Re: RedSea Max/ Euroreef Skimmer Page

Hi Todd. I haven't even installed the skimmer box yet - it's still in the package it came in. Good idea though. The tank looks so much clearer, but after an hour with my gloved arm in the tank and a razor scraper it better look better! Other than the production of skimmate finally beginning I was also impressed with how much the microbubbles have disappeared. I'm going to leave it set high for the night and will start teaking it lower tomorrow.

By the way I also took out the Vortech, took it all apart & cleaned it. I soaked it a couple hours in D&D Ezeclean and most of the coralline came off very easily. I've found the Ezeclean works a lot better & quicker than vinegar since you can adjust the strength of the acid if you want. It's a bit expensive vs. vinegar but I like it. Then I had problems getting the Vortech re-started. There's a small white washer in there that has to be placed back in correctly or it won't spin at all. There were a few tense minutes there!

Re: RedSea Max/ Euroreef Skimmer Page

Terry,
Great info on the EZ Clean. I may have to try that sometime. I use distilled viniger. It amazing how much more the Vortech puts out flow wise when clean!!! It really makes a big difference.
Adding the overflow will make a difference as well. And you can raise up the water in the tank and lower it in the back compartment. This is next to impossible without it I would think.
I am very happy the skimmer is working out well and is now breaking in for you. Keep us posted!
I think by morning time when you wake up your going to be pleasantly surprised!
