Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

Thanks. Velcro is also part of my CUC LOL! He does a great job of helping to keep the back clean, as they eat coralline. Too bad he can't keep up with all of it. He can however knock frags loose that aren't firmly attached - why I finally did a job of permanently attaching the birdsnest.

Hahahahaha! Good one Dave! I guess I'm only living dangerously in the tank lately! Maybe I should change my ID to DangerMack.

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

We were discussing cameras in another thread, and I decided to see what kind of pics I could get with a little digital camcorder of my wife's - a little Sanyo C6 with only 6 megapixels - low by today's standard. I've seen some awesome pics taken with this little camera by another RC member. I spent 5 minutes with the instructions so I could set it in macro mode, and took about a dozen pictures. I was pretty amazed with some of the results, and now that I've figured out some things about the camera I may try using it more often. A couple of these pics are better than I've done with my Canon DSLR.

Some pink zoas in my 6G tank:

One of the Peppermints:

The new little Fiji blue Devil in the small tank - couldn't get him to sit still LOL!

Shroom & cane frag in the RSM. I noticed the little arms on a micro serpent star sticking up behind the shroom on the left. Amazing what the camera can see that your eye doesn't!

The green Pocillopora:

A couple macros of my Ricordea yumas:

And the camera ($99 on Ebay last year):

Not bad for a camera with only 6MP. And I thought it was only good for video!

Cool pics and for a $99 camera, it sure works good! I need to get a macro lens for my SLR. What's a good one for a decent price?

None of the macros are cheap, with the camera manufacturer's lenses usually the most expensive (but often the best quality). There are some non-manufacturer lenses that are rated highly, at less cost. All you can do is search around for what's compatible with your camera. I always found B&H Photo to have some of the best prices, and they offer both manufacturer made lenses, as well as the others. I ended up getting a 60mm Canon Macro from them. Great lens, but I'm usually too lazy to switch lenses LOL! I think the 100mm macro may be a better macro lens, but was too much higher in cost for me. Keep in mind that a macro isn't very versatile for non-macro shots. To get a full FTS with my 60mm requires me to back up several feet to fit the whole tank in the picture.

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

redsea reefer - the Flame Angel is behaving super - haven't seen him even look the wrong way at a coral. The Raccoon is nipping a few things though - seems to like some of my palys and the green Nephthea. Doesn't bother the zoas though, or the Blastos or SPS, etc. But, the majanos are disappearing so he's accomplishing his main purpose. One side of my big green Pocillopora was covered in Majanos, and the branches on that side are dead. I can barely see a sign of any Majanos left on it now. Same with the ones in the rest of my tank. I may have to remove him eventually, but the amount of good he's doing really outweighs the bad.

On the little camera, some of the best macro shots I've seen here and on on my local club site have been taken with that little cam. However, IMO it's much better for close ups than for FTS shots.

Hah! When I was a kid I used to bite my nails to the bone. Then my mom put some foul tasting stuff on my fingers, and they've never been very short since. Tough nails like I have are handy as an emergency screwdriver, mini-scrapers, etc. They are in need of a trimming though.
