| NaClH2O Addicted ![]() | Re: Reefmack's RSM 130 Hi Tom & thanks. It took me a couple months to get rid of Xenia, and here I am adding it again. The first one I added back came on a dead SPS branch and I attached it so that it's "out on a limb" so to speak. Since they colonize their way towards light, and to do that it would have to go into the shade from the Monti cap, it's kinda stuck where it is (I hope). The new blue form is already on top, so it can't readily spread upward, but it could spread sideways. Risky but I really loved the color of it - a nice bluish purple, and it's tough to find corals that are that color. It gives a little splash of unique color. I asked the guy at the LFS if it would stay blue and he said dosing potassium would help, but other than adding potassium via a trace element additive, I have no way to specifically dose potassium. It seems like dosing potassium is becoming more popular now.

| Achilles Tang | Re: Reefmack's RSM 130 I've got to do something. I cut it back to 3 big branches every 2 weeks and by the next time I'm back up to 8 or 10. Where I've tried to remove the smaller branches, I've stripped them and all the little parts show up growing new branches in 20 new spots a week later. You told me months ago that would happen and boy you were right. I'm going to get these pink ones out now while I can. If I can find something a LOT slower growing I may try them again down the road. If nothing else it gives me new high ground room for trying a few SPSs next month after i get my lights in. It's all fun!

| NaClH2O Addicted ![]() | Re: Reefmack's RSM 130 Hi Tom - the Xenia can be a nightmare! It can only be defeated by persistence in trimming it and I think a prayer would help The best tool I found to trim it was a spring loaded office clip that I got at work:![]() I found I could use this to get close to the base of the stalks, made sure the "blades" were clamped tight with finger pressure, and I'd twist it off the rock, without losing pieces that could settle elsewhere and grow into new colonies. But, as you know it will regrow from the flesh left on the rock. So I just kept after the little stalks as they would pop up, and it seemed like it finally gave up after weeks of this. The clip is now back to doing it's duty in sealing potato chip and snack bags, till I need it again. ![]()

| Achilles Tang | Re: Reefmack's RSM 130 Terry..... I'll try that. I've been using a long pair of curved forceps. Their great on the big heavy stalks but nothing smaller. Thanks!

| NaClH2O Addicted ![]() | Re: Reefmack's RSM 130 Hi again Jim! Here's an official... To Reef Sanctuary and THE RSM Club. There are types of SPS that do just fine under the stock lights - Birdsnest (Seriatopora), and the Montipora types, as well as some others. So, your LFS isn't totally correct on SPS. The Acropora types may be a bigger challenge, but I've even seen some types of those doing well under stock lights. SPS just needs to kept up on or near the top. I'm running a MH/T5 fixture now, so I don't worry about having enough light. There's no lack of ways to spend $$$ in this hobby! ![]()

| Cabbage Leather | Re: Reefmack's RSM 130 Hi Reefmack, I haven't visited Reef Sanctuary in quite a while, but I just read your postings for the last month or so. You really had me laughing with your story about bleaching your wife's shirt, but what struck me, was that you revealed to all of RS that your wife colors her hair. If it was me, I would have been more upset about that, than the ruined shirt. LOL Your tank looks great as always. My tank will have it's first Birthday in about a week so I guess I should take some pictures and get them posted. |

| NaClH2O Addicted ![]() | Welcome Dutchbros! Power outage here - 1 loss so far Hello Dutchbros and to Reef Sanctuary and the RSM Club subforum. I'm currently running a BlueLine HQI - 14K. Not the best bulb out there, but I like the 14K much better than the 10K and 20K lamps that I've tried.Update: we lost power last night - outside temperatures in the 40s, rain, and winds have been about 20-30mph since yesterday. Power was off from about 11 pm to 7 am (about 8 hours), and with the heavy winds (what's left of Hurricane Ida) the house cooled down quicker than it normally would. When the power came back on I went downstairs to be sure the LifeReef siphon to the sump restarted (which it did). The tank temperature was down to 72.6 F (22.5 C) and I did a quick survey of things with a flashlight. I at first thought the Mandarin was dead, but he started creeping again. Then I noticed that my Flame Angel had died. I hated to see that. Sitting here finishing a cup of coffee before I go pull out the angel and look for more losses - I hope the other fish are alive and will be OK. I'll post an update later. The tank has risen 2 degrees in the last hour so that's good. I'll post an update later today.
