Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

MatthewJ - good luck with the Mandarin. I might have come home with one Saturday but they didn't have any.

I just grabbed a couple quick pictures before I came upstairs. I couldn't spot the new lawnmower blenny for a picture, although he's usually in sight. They're very camoflaged and there are times I look for him and he's right in front of me. I think most know what one looks like anyway. I did grab a picture of the Blue Tuxedo Pincushion Urchin I put the RSM Saturday - he's been moving around a lot on the back and was up at the waterline when I took this not-so-great picture:

And the little Wheeler's Watchman Goby I added to the little 9g tank. He can be hard to spot at times and often quickly darts into the rock when I go up to the tank, but I did get him to pose for a bit. Only a bit over an inch long, so he has a bit to grow to a max. of about 3" - a very pretty little fish:

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

A better picture of the urchin. It's trying to clean the coralline off the Vortech, but I need to teach it to do a more thorough job.

It would be nice if it spent more time on the algae too!

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

It is a pretty critter! You can see the path he's followed around the Vortech by the missing coralline.

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

Well, the urchin isn't quite as clean now. In a bit over an hour it's moved off the pump and across the bottom to the left side. On it's way it picked up an old coralline covered hermit shell, and it's now stuck on its back. My wife has now named the urchin - Velcro - Hah!

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

Mavjoy - I've seen folks eating the inside of sea urchins freshly pulled from the ocean, but I'll take a pass on that, and stay with the more traditional (and cooked) foods!

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

I've eaten many things in my life. My parents were fans of steak tartare (beef, not horse). But raw fish just doesn't do it for me.

Now I've developed a seafood allergy (not sure exactly to what, but I avoid all of it to be safe)...so I'm off the hook...heh heh heh...

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

Rue - I became allergic to bivalves - clams, scallops, etc. I used to be able to eat them, but after having a couple of what to me felt like "near death" experiences eating them I now have to avoid them. I'm fine with shrimp, lobster & fish though. I liked your "off the hook" comment!

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

Thanks...I can't help myself...(drives my kids insane).

I don't even have to eat the seafood...I just have to breath it in.

I'm fairly sure mussels are the main culprit - I won't even go into a restaurant that specializes in them. However, if someone eats shrimp around me, I'm fine...

I wish the medical community would be more interested. I'd hate to think I was giving up some of my favourite foods for no reason. But no one wants to to test me...and I'm scared to test myself...

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

Rue - it sounds like you may have developed the bivalve allergy that I did, but maybe even worse if even the odor affects you. We had a girl that once worked hear that was affected the same way by strawberries - she didn't even have to eat them either. You might be able to tell with some allergy testing by a doctor.

Re: Reefmack's RSM 130

LOL...I asked my Doctor about testing...

...her reply was...

"No need. Just don't eat it!"

That's as far as I got. I guess avoiding all seafood isn't a hardship in her books...
