RSM 130 and 130D Mods

Hey I was just wondering what you all have done to modify your RSM. I'm going to (hopefully) do some modifications to mine and I just want to get some ideas. Thanks!

P.S. If you could include pics it would help a lot!

Re: RSM mods

Do you have the original 130 model, or the 130D? The 130D IMO needs no modification.

Re: RSM mods

Decorahvikes - to Reef Sanctuary as well as to the Red Sea Max Owners Club! Lots of mods have been tried on the original 130 model, as well as additional equipment added (ATO, overflow boxes to a sump/refugium). It's difficult to keepack of them all, as many are mentioned in someone's tank threads. I did a look back through the 4 pages of threads we now have, and tried to pick out what might actually qualify as "mods". Most are skimmer related, but there are some on replacing the 2 pumps, adding extra lights, etc.

The 2 things that most owners usually do early on is to add a powerhead to the right corner for more flow - typically a Koralia #1 or #2, and adding a rotating Hydor Flo on one of the RSM powerheads.

Here's some threads with other mods that you my be interested in:

expected skimmer output

MJ1200 pump mod

Breaking the old RSM back out.

Skimmer question...

Extending the return pumps nozzle down...

rsm extra lighting

Let us know how your tank is doing, how long it's been set up, and maybe start a thread on it? And if you can, post a picture in the Full Tank RSM Photos thread:

Re: RSM mods

Thanks Reefmack! Yeah I've added a Koralia and a Hydor. I also have a Tunze 9002 skimmer on the way. I'm going to try to modify my lights and try to add a sump/fuge.

Re: RSM mods

Decorahvikes - if you do any mods please post them! I'm still on a standstill with my sump/fuge. I've got everything I need - just trying to find the time to install it and test it thoroughly. It looks like the week I'm off for the Christmas holiday. I already have a thread on it, waiting to be finished LOL!

Re: RSM mods

and the tunze 9002 is a very good upgrade! I'm also planning on getting one later and making my back chambers fuge with chaeto and tunze skimmer at the same time .

Re: RSM mods

If and when I do these mods I'll post pics for sure! I'm getting a 300 gallon tank in about a month and I'll be involved with that for a long time. So we'll see what happens...

Mavjoy- I was thinkin of turning that into a fuge too. Do you know how much light chaeto needs?

Re: RSM mods

hey I've got a question for you guys. Ok so the 9002 came today and I was taking out the stock skimmer to put in the new one when I thought "wait, what am I going to do for mechanical filtration now?" (seeing as the coarse and fine filter pads sat on top of the stock skimmer pump.). So my question is- are you all doing any kind of mechanical filtration? Or just leaving it out? Also, did you put the skimmer on the right or left side? Thanks for your help!

Re: RSM mods

I'm not running the 9002, but I am running a hang on Remora. For a while I just propped a piece of the original black sponge, cut to about 1 - 1.5 inches thick, propped up against the heater pane glass. It stayed there very well, and was easy to pull out and rinse. Now I run a 3 tier media basket that is made and sold by a guy on another forum. I'll PM you the information in case you want to try making one or buying one.

Re: RSM mods

Added homemade overflow using hang on specimin container with a bulkhead drilled into the bottom and a stand pipe. This feeds a JBJ 24 gallon nano sitting inside the stand under RSM. The return from 24 gallon nano is fed to a chiller then to the tank. The 24 gallon nano is purely refugium on opposite light cycle, nothing in it but deep sand bed, LR, feather dusters and Macro algaes. I took all other filtration out of the RSM except for the stock protien skimmer and no filtration on the 24 gallon nano. The flow is really slow through the refugium so any suspended debris settles out down there. Thousands and thousands of copepods in the refugium. My RSM made a 180 degree turn after adding the refugium, no more cyano or hair algae and all corals have just exploded. Still doing 4 gallon water change weekly. I also vaccum the sand and rubble in the RSM during those water changes. I jump started my refugium by vaccumming RSM into the refugium upon first setup.
