Moonlights

How long do you leave your Moonlights on? I have seen places where some people leave them on 24 hrs and some that turn them on and off 2 Hrs before/after regular lighting cycle. Whats your take?

Re: Moonlights

Mine are on 24 hrs, just because I haven't put them onto a timer. I have never thought deeper into it. I guess I could just put them on a timer for night time!

Re: Moonlights

I actually like leaving them on all night adds a nice mood to the room with the shimmer. Just wasnt sure if anybody is really against it. I may try to mod in 2 white LED moonlights.

Re: Moonlights

I put on both my white and blue moonlights starting at 10pm and run them until midnight. Then I leave the blues on by themselves from 12 midnight until 4am.

Re: Moonlights

There are some that say you need to turn them off for a time as it is unnatural for the fish to have light 24hrs a day. I am fortunate and my light on the reef actually follows the moon phases and my other 2 tanks don't have moonlights. I would probably run them similar to the actinics and run them 2 hrs before and 2 hrs after the actinics like I run the actinics 2hrs before and 2 hrs after the MH.

Not having stock RSM lighting is cheating. But I guess I will look into the wiring and see the options that are ahead of me.

Re: Moonlights

I've always run mine all night. I've got the raised hood so I have the white + blue on for a couple hours before & after the MH, and then actinics shut off (or come on). I'm cheating LOL!

I leave mine on 24 hrs. but thinking of just turning them on at night. Are there any side effects if you leave them on all the time?

Re: Moonlights

I chatted with our chief techie bod, and he recommends not having moonlights on all night. Maybe a couple of hours either side of the main lighting, but there should be regular periods of complete darkness. I'm following his advice on this one.

Re: Moonlights

and why did he suggest "couple hours on either side of main lighting"? Just curious if that was an educated suggestion or just keeping it easy to set up the timer type of thing.

Moon lights on 24/7 doesn't hurt the corals of fish in any way but everyone had their own ideas

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: Moonlights

I turn mine on if I'm around and want a bit of night viewing when the main lights go off. The reference to "a couple of hours each side" isn't critical, but it means the aquarium gets low lighting either side of the main photoperiod. Not something to worry about, just a personal preference. Most of the time I don't use the moonlights at all.
