Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

I'm a bit overstocked, but no problems handling the bio-load and no fish fights LOL. I have a pair of Ocellaris clowns, a Diadem dottyback, Foxface, Blackfinned Shrimp Goby, yellowtail damsel. Luckily very little aggression between them. I've had all of them except the Foxface well over a year now, and the Foxface for several months.

Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

I went to my LFS today to pick some NSW and lucky me they just got a new shipment. They got some new crocea "ultra" clams(4"-5"). I put one on hold 'cause they won't sell it to me after 5-7 days . I still bought a small frag of some kind of monti. I don't know the name but it's has a green color and orange polyps. I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it.

Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

Thanks RM. My cuz just gave me a frag(more like a colony) of his birdsnest today and I'll be posting some pics later. What do they usually eat? Do you have to target feed them? Thanks.

Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

Birdsnest should do fine on light - it's an SPS so try to get it on or near the top. Photosynthetic so target feeding is not really a necessity. There are different types of corals called birdsnest so I'll be interested to see it.

Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

Sup guys/gals, I finally got my birdsnest glued on my middle LR and took some pics of it. I also got a few corals from my LFS today. I got a brain and another goni. I really don't know the names so feel free to chime in. The new goni is not open yet and the brain looks fine, plus I also frag my blue xenia and used a toothpick to anchor the frag on one of my LR and hopefully it holds up. Enjoy the pics.

FTS

What do you feed brain coral? I was thinking of giving it some pieces of shrimp or squid?

Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

Mavjoy - the tank is really looking great! I suppose you could feed the brain some small pieces of shrimp or squid. I've never target fed mine, but it sure wouldn't hurt as long as you don't overdo it and get a lot of rotting food in the tank.

I'm not sure which corals you're not sure of, but the one under the new birdsnest is a Duncan (aka Whisker Coral). My Duncans have multipled like crazy, with no target feeding, and they seem to be a pretty easy coral to keep. I'm guessing that within a couple weeks you'll see some new little Duncan heads popping out. Good job "toothpicking" the Xenia - that's one of the few ways to get those softies to attach. A few weeks back tried to superglue a Nepthea to a frag plug, but it just wasn't holding well or attaching, so I removed it from the frag plug and used a rubberband to hold it in a small depression on a small piece of live rock - after a couple weeks it attached and I cut the rubberband off, and then attached the small rock. The toothpick is a better idea for large pieces of rock though. If the Xenia does well, it will try to move up in the tank, leaving colonies behind it as it moves. I see you have it segregated from your main rock - good idea. If it does well it'll grow like a weed, especially if it's the Elongata or Pom Pom type.

I'd never seen a pic of goni retracted - thanks for enlightening me!

Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

Sup RM, I was thinking about the birdsnest scientific name or something..hehe..and maybe the Goniopora too. Bad news about the xenia frag, it's missing and there is this type of slug or snail(light color) that is hanging around the spot where the xenia used to be. The snail extend its body to move from one place to another. First time I've seen this critter.

Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

I think that type of birdsnest is a Seriatopora species - probably Seriatopora hystrix. Goiniopora is Goniopora species, aka Flower Pot by some. It's possible that the Xenia slid up and off the toothpick - they are very slippery. I should know - I've probably cut at least 50 colonies of it off of my rock till I was able to declare victory in eradicating it (knock on wood!). It may be under or behind your rock somewhere, rather than being eaten by the snail. Did you get a pic of the snail?

Centipede looking critter - may be a bristleworm. No idea on the snails.

Re: Just got done setting up my RSM!

I guess everything is well and it's been 2 weeks since my last WC. I'll be testing my water tomorrow and see if it's still stable and acceptable. I'm soo used to doing weekly WC but every 2 weeks or so is much better.
