| Tunicate | Replacement Lights, Red Slime, Ick I set up my RSM in May 2008. I've heard that the standard RSM are not the best lights -- I recently had a bad outbreak of red slime algae, which my LFS stated was likely due to the low spectrum lights from RSM even after just a few months (...he wasn't trying to sell me lights, and told me to check out lights online, adding to his credibility in mind) -- and have now just changed the lights. I bought the RSM lights just becuase that was convient this time, but how do people feel about RSM lights? If you've used another brand, what have you specifically used as a good replacement? Red Slime is such a nuiscance. I hope the change of lights will help. I've been diong water changes and sucking it out a couple of times a week. I also added a pholsphate remover this past week to see if that'll help. Also, I experienced Ick. I used Kick-Ick last week, and my two clowns and yellow tail damal all kicked the bucket overnight after the 4th dose. My six line wrasse looks like he's going fine for now... but it's probably only a matter of time... Thanks, |

| Cabbage Leather | Re: Replacement Lights, Red Slime, Ick DT is display tank. Thanks, I found it to be quite appropriate for this site... (chaotic currents) I'm really into his psychology/philosophy

| NaClH2O Addicted ![]() | Re: Replacement Lights, Red Slime, Ick edfkbf - to Reef Sanctuary and the Red Sea Max Club forum. I've had my RSM up for about 18 months, and only had a small patch or two of red slime within the first couple months after setting up the tank. It could be aged bulbs that are helping the red slime grow. Most RSM owners seem to be replacing them at about 6-8 months. Maybe replacing yours will help. In my case, I adjusted my current from my powerheads towards the slime areas and that and siphoning the worst of it out had it disappear fairly quickly. I think good flow helps, plus not overfeeding. How are your nitrate readings? Tested for phosphates? Phosphates and nitrates (NO3) are primary nutrient food sources for red and other slime algae. Are you using RO/DI water or tap? Tap can introduce a lot of things that algae and cyano (red slime) feed on. The phosphate remover you added should help. Are you running any powerheads other than the 2 RSM pumps? Most of us added a Koralia #1 or 2 in that right hand corner to get more flow in the tank. Red slime is a real PITA, and it can affect both new and old tanks.Sorry about the ich situation and losing the fish. Kick-Ick is supposedly reef safe, so at least you haven't added any copper to the tank. Check out the good information on the link that Icstorc posted.

| Cabbage Leather | Re: Replacement Lights, Red Slime, Ick Ah, as long as you haven't added copper you should be able to keep corals.

| Tunicate | Re: Replacement Lights, Red Slime, Ick Thanks for your replies. It's been several weeks, and the six lined wrasse is going very well. I did several water changes (only RO/DI). The red slime is still a problem but I just added more phosphate remover. QUESTION: I will also get a Koralia #1 or 2 for more motion -- is one better? Do I need a wavemaker, or can I just attach via magnet to the glass and plug in? I just added a serpent star fish and a beautiful Golden Sailfin Bleeny, which is reportedly very difficult to get a hold of. Very cool fish. |

| NaClH2O Addicted ![]() | Re: Replacement Lights, Red Slime, Ick edfkbf - good to hear from you again. Serpent stars are a great member of a cleanup crew and don't end up starving like many other stars. The Golden Sailfin Blenny sounds pretty. If you ever get a picture of your critters post one or more in the RSM Inverts & Fish thread: Red Sea Max Inverts & Fish Thread And a current tank shot in the Full Tank RSM Photos Good to hear things are going well! ![]() And

| NaClH2O Addicted ![]() | Re: Replacement Lights, Red Slime, Ick edfkbf - a Koralia 1 or 2 in that right hand corner is a good choice. I had a #1 for a long time and was happy with it. Some use a #2, but I preferred the lower GPH of a #1 for the corals I was keeping and the height of my rock. You'd probably be happy with either. Yes - they just attach with a magnet, and you run the cord over the back. Wavemakers are OK but I recently got a Vortech that I think is better than a wavemaker. Expensive though.
