RSM 40w hood mod.

I had seen this done by someone else, and thought it would be a nice addition. I already had a Current 20" fixture laying around that I had originally bought for my fuge. The project really wasnt that hard, so I have about 5hrs tied up into it right now. As far as the extra heat goeas I added a small fan to the sump, so right now I kinda have a wait and see attitiude to how the fan is gonna work......

Wow - what a difference! How many watts are you up to now? External ballast I assume? Separate power cord? Have you got any splashguard under the new lamps?

Re: RSM 40w hood mod.

Well I added 40watts to the front lid, if you look at pic.#4 you can see that I mounted the ballast on the right of the bulb, the power cord comes out the left and is still a work in progress as I need to secure it to the back part of the lid, when you open and close just the front the cord has no way to retract and ends up in the water. I used the splash gaurd that came with the light, you can see it in pic #6. I also have 2 Current 10K LED light strips at 4watts each, the LED really add that MH shimmer. So as far as wattage total 158 watt....

Great job. Most of what I asked I can now see in the pictures - and the thread is titled 40W - duh on me!

Re: RSM 40w hood mod.

redseareef The bulb is a 40w 7100k, I would like that find something in a 10k/actintic. The biggest thing I noticed was the shadows w/out the mod., as you can see in the two pics at the begining of the post, the green acan in the center had a shadow on the front polyp. BTW thanks for the kudos, the mod was pretty easy...

Re: RSM 40w hood mod.

You know, after really comparing pics, it did bring out some more color for sure!!!
If I do tha tmod, I want to wedge two 24 inch T5's in there. I know the retrofit kit is 23.25 inches! So, it will fit!
Maybe a 50/50 bilb and a solid blue bulb I was thinking. Not sure though.
Thanks

That sounds sweet!!! My only complaint with my set up is I can only find 40w 7100k bulbs. I like your idea better!

Re: RSM 40w hood mod.

Doubleduece,
Did you cut the hood while still mounted to the rest of the hood? IF I do this mod, I am going a ATI Super blue actinic and a 75/25 UVI bulb. I got some help from "The Grim Reefer" at Reef Central.
I have a few other idea and am waiting for some emails. Trying to research it FULLY! I am T5 IGNORANT!!!!!!LOL!
Great job though the lighting. Looks really nice. You know Current USA makes like a 95 watter in that size too!
Thanks

Re: RSM 40w hood mod.

I took the front hood piece off. Once you open the hood you have to pry it open at the hinge. The mechanism that hold the two pieces together, is two cylinders on bigger then the other, with the smaller one having a slight taper...

Re: RSM 40w hood mod.

DD,
Thanks, I would love a sunset/sunrise type of blue light. Not sure what to do yet.
If I do a mod, this will be about the only thing. After, I should be good to go! Thanks for the answer. Looks like you ahve room to spare in there too for even a wider reflector if you wanted huh?
Nice, I like it! The fans look factory too!
Thanks
