Re: Active Carbon

I'm about to put some carbon in my sump, Do I rinse the stuff in ro/di water? The directions say tap water is ok. Also, I don't have any pantyhose around. I do have some of those mesh bootys from the hospital. I assume they are sterile. How much carbon for 200? I plan to rinse about 2 cups carbon and the sock in tap and stuff it between two baffle panels. I have pretty high flow so I think it will get good exposure.

Re: Active Carbon

RO is better than tap water,,,will flush it clean without the carbon trying to clean the tap water,,,also RO will help flush any residue P04 from the carbon.

Re: Active Carbon

You will be surprised at how the carbon polishes the water! It only takes a very, very small amount of carbon (sorry couldnt' find the link..). Remove it after a few days since it gets exhausted very quickly.

Re: Active Carbon

Thanks ! I did rinse with tap and stuffed the sock with 2 cups of carbon pellets between 2 baffle panels. My HA garden is growing too well and need to take action! With the PO4 in carbon issue is it best to soak the carbon in ro ?

Re: Active Carbon

Yes.. soaking the carbon in ro/di will help remove the po4. Do you have room for some phosban or rowaphos? I would use phosban/rowaphos 24/7 and just use the carbon for a week every month or so...

Re: Active Carbon

I read a great article last week naturaly I forgot to bookmark it, but the guy basicaly said a little carbon thru a nice slow flow pump goes a long way. Seemed to make sense.

Re: Active Carbon

I use small amounts of Seachem Matrix carbon on all my tanks in addition to Purigen. I believe the old wives tales on how carbon will strip out many of the trace elements and leach large amounts of phosphates are both false.

Re: Active Carbon

After 3 days ,I think my water looks more clear. Two cups in a 200 doesn't sound like anough to me. Just not sure.

Re: Active Carbon

That would be plenty of carbon for your 200. After a 3-5 days, replace it with 2 more cups of new carbon if you want.

Re: Active Carbon

As Witty said, "yep,,,,contact time"! I use Chemi-Pure in my sump but less than what is recommended - start low/small and work your way up. Make sure you test the carbon ahead of time for possible phosphate leaching and surface area should be as large as possible. Locate your carbon source where your water first passes through filtering material to eliminate any large particulate matter adhering to where the media is maintained and maximizes the porosity of the carbon surface area that is available for filtration.

Re: Active Carbon

How

I use small amounts of Seachem Matrix carbon on all my tanks in addition to Purigen. I believe the old wives tales on how carbon will strip out many of the trace elements and leach large amounts of phosphates are both false.

You have all of that correct, only I like lagrer amounts. Also, Matrix is the best GAC there is, if you want to pay the little extra. There are better carbons but not in this hobby

Craker

Me, on a 200, it would be at least a liter and cleaing it once a week

Re: Active Carbon

Thanks Lots of methods used here. A liter is like over 4 cups! So washing it to extend it's usefulness would be helpful. How about rinsing and soaking in RO? Would it help to crunch it up a little ? It won't be as good as new but would give You a little more use out of it.
